Morning sickness - advice for 1st timer?

I'm 5w4d today (first time pregnant) and I woke up this morning feeling really queasy for the first time.

Pre-pregnancy I'd have coffee (yes, I'm on decaf now!) and eggs for breakfast and avoid carbs in the morning because they make me bloated and hungry.

But this morning I made some ginger tea and didn't feel like eating anything except an orange -- which I promptly threw up, along with my vitamins. I did manage to keep down the vitamins an hour later with a hard-boiled egg but now a few hours later I'm still feeling queasy and hungry but not interested in any food!

What are you ladies doing or eating to help with the quesies? Any advice from the moms that have been through this before?

Re: Morning sickness - advice for 1st timer?

  • I had mild morning sickness my first pregnancy. I sipped water with sliced citrus fruit throughout the day, and snacked frequently. I switched between carbs and protein for my snacks. I started as soon as I had my BFP and, although I frequently felt nauseous, I didn't throw up very often. I hope it works again, but the nausea started much sooner this time.

  • For me I would have to keep crackers and water next to my bed and have some before even getting out of bed. I also couldn't let myself get really hungry or else I would feel so sick.

I hope you feel better and it passes soon!

  • @Chichigo: ooh, like the idea of citrus water. Will definitely try that. Right now all I'm really interested in eating seems really carb-y but I know I need to get protein so I'll try alternating.

@beth6287 it was an awful way to start the day so I'll try keeping a snack next to the bed like you suggested. Before I got pregnant I was eating quite low carb so I didn't snack much since the protein and fat kept me feeling full on 1-2 meals a day but I can see that's not going to be workable now!
  • Jello!! Eat jello in the morning!

  • Take your vitamins before bedtime. Sometimes the iron isn't of the highest quality and I can cause bad nadeau and vomiting. I had to be on prescription iron last time so I just ate my gummy vitamins in the morning and I took the iron pill right before bed.

  • I noticed that if I suck on hard candy jar rancher or a sucker it keeps me from throwing up and eat snacks throw out the day drink plenty of water stay away from soda Gatorade juice and drink ginger ale at bedtime you can also take your prenatal vitamins at night time to you
  • Thanks ladies!! Appreciate all the advice :)

The nausea is coming and going (thank goodness) so I'm just trying to go with the flow and eat when I'm not feeling queasy and respect the food aversions (coffee! really!?! I LOVE coffee and yes, we have decaf for me but I just can't even smell it right now without feeling icky... so weird).
