Character's names, nerdy names

My DH is a huge Lord of the Rings fan and wants to name the baby after a character, one of the elves! I was super opposed at first, but he is so into it and its so endearing, that I feel like I'm being swayed. Any other mamas considering character-reference names?

  • I've heard of Harley Quinn being used before (I actually kind of like that one for either gender!) and we thought about Galadriel, too!
  • My husband is very serious about wanting to name a son Random, like from the Chronicles of Amber by Zelazny. While he likes the series quite a lot, I'm not sure it's so much a direct homage as just plain liking the name.

I am...much less enthusiastic.  I also dislike the nicknames Rand and Randy, might be able to handle Dom (though that's a coworker's nickname).  I'm partial to an unusual name myself, but it comes from his family tree and is a real name. :P

I'm really hoping we'll be able to figure something out (team green, so maybe we'll luck out and have a girl, but we need to be prepared just in case).

Our husbands are really cute, I think these names are far out but I like the sentiment and I like non traditional naMes.. My DH wants Luthien or Tinuviel from LOTR for girl. Harley Quinn is cute and I like Dom!

  • My hubby only likes names that sound like gladiators :/ Maximus and Tiberius are the favs...I'd be will to settle for Max and let him use Maximus as a nickname :) but you also have to consider these poor kids growing up with crazy names!
  • We've actually got quite a few geeky name references on our list.
    Quinn (Harley Quinn, Batman)
    Remi (Remi Lebau, Gambit, X-Men)
    Logan (Wolverine, X-Men)
    Link (Legend of Zelda)
That's just a few of them. Nothing wrong with it, in my opinion. My mom named me after a character from the movie "Steele Magnolias" and that was never considered strange. :)

I love unusual names. I had my heart set on Aurora (sleeping beauty) My husband didn't like it at all so had to cross it off the list!!! :(
I'm the one coming up with unusual names and my husband is being the sensible one!
I like Sabbath for a girl
Marmaduke I love for a boy!!!
    :) I of course won't be allowed either! :P
  • We have both agreed to name the baby if a girl, Sora from Kingdom Hearts and Draco if a boy symbolizing dragon.

I am in love with the name Arawyn, which is my character's name in Oblivion and Skyrim. It's similar to an elf from LOTR. My son's name if from a movie, not because of the character but just because I liked it.

  • We are legitimately considering Bruce Wayne for a boy. My awesome FIL is Wayne, so the middle name is partially a nod to him
  • My partner is determined to give our boy the middle name Huckleberry, as a term of affection from Tombstone. I'm rolling with it since its kind of cute and I have no real opposition to it. All our names are nerd references, but this is the most extreme. That and Oswin for a girl (Oswin Rebekah, Oswin is a nod to Doctor Who's impossible girl) but we've decided that will be the second daughter, not the first.

I love Ellesmera from the Inheritance series. It's a place, but I think it's beautiful. I also love Saphira, which was the dragon's name in the book. Pretty sure DH won't go for either, but I thought they were pretty.

  • My boyfriend is dead set on naming our daughter Yoshimi. It's a flaming lips song/album. I've talked him down to a middle name, but I still worry it's too wierd for a name. Especially since neither of us is in any way ethnic.
  • @chibimeeko Our son is going to be named after Tyrion. We're just spelling it with an a instead of an o so it will be Tyrian :)

If it was a girl she would have been named after Olivia from Scandal and Tiana from the princess and the frog.
  • Forgot to mention - we're pretty set on Rose for a girl.  It isn't mostly a nod to Dr. Who since it's a family name we like on both sides, but that's an extra little bonus. :)
  • Yay for Doctor Who! I was going to say Rory or Jack for a boy. Lovely men of the Doctor.
  • My husband and step son are really set in Link if it's a boy. Really hoping it's a girl do I don't need to fight that battle. But I'm sure then it will just change to Zelda. Ugh!
  • Just remember your child has to get a job some day. I try to think about that when I'm naming them. I like unique names, but we don't want to get too crazy. I heard a few years ago from a friend that a boy in their child's class was named Falcon. I think that may make getting a job as an adult difficult. Just something to think about when coming up with names.
  • It seems strange to me to name your child so strongly after the parents' own interest in comic books/video games/TV shows. I'm a musician but am not considering naming my child after an artist or composer. To me, it would seem like superimposing my own passions onto my unborn child. I also wouldn't want to think of that musician every time I say my child's name.

Anyone remember that set of parents a few years ago that named their daughter Hashtag because they were so into technology?

  • Hubby and I named our daughter River Leah ( pronounced Leia) after Dr. Who and after Princess Leia from star wars. Hubby is really pushing for 'James Tiberius Kirk' from Star Trek if it's a boy.
  • I also really like the name Jericho if it's a boy.... It's not really 'nerdy' but I just like it cause it's different. Thoughts?
  • My husband and step son are really set in Link if it's a boy. Really hoping it's a girl do I don't need to fight that battle. But I'm sure then it will just change to Zelda. Ugh!

I had this problem too! But then we bought a new car and my husband 'named' it Zelda, so it's not allowed to be used anymore! :)
  • I seriously liked Willow for a girl - after the Buffy character - because I think it's pretty and sounds nice with Piper (DD #1). Unfortunately, I forced hubby to watch too many episodes of Buffy with me while dating, and he vetoed it. Also vetoed Cordelia, even though I argued that one is also from Shakespeare! Lol. At least we agreed on a name, although it's not really nerdy - Autumn.

  • Hubby wants the name Michael Angelo (last name here) (Michaelangelo) after TMNT and nickname him Mikey like they do in the show/movie. Leonardo is already popular and so is Rafael. He didn't really like Donatello because then it would be "too obvious" lol like Michaelangelo isn't obvious.
  • Oh forgot to mention. He also liked the name Arthas from World of Warcraft. I said no because I am for the Horde....lol.
  • @insomniack17 FOR THE HORRRRDDDE!!!!!
  • We named our son after Gambit, Remy LeBeau, from Marvel. Just spelled it different, Remmie. I wasn't a fan at first but the name fits him perfectly.

If this LO is a boy, we are leaning towards Ronin!

I wanted Saphira but hubby said no :( maybe because we know two or three people who used it, so he thinks it's too popular.
  • @jbettles, People keep asking if we are fans of Charmed because we are naming LO Piper! I'm waiting for someone to ask if it's because of OITNB, nope! Just love the name. Also, for the 2nd middle name we chose Ariel like The Little Mermaid! Hubby suggested it & I'm in love! If you would have asked me when I was 10 what I would name my daughter, it would have been Ariel! Also, anyone seen their picked name everywhere these days (maybe I'm just paying attention more). On my registry I had picked a pack n play that was the Piper edition, I keep hearing Savannah everywhere, and I've seen t-shirts and merchandise everywhere for The Little Mermaid. It's like serendipitous or something!

Rose is my favorite companion and I think it's a beautiful name, so this was on my list too. buuuuuut it's also my ex's mom's name, so hubby won't let me use it. if my ex and I had had a daughter we would have used it, so hubby thinks it's tainted.
  • @PerkinsFam3 : My mom LOVES Charmed, so she wondered about Piper, but I remembered it was a character on the show after we fell in love with it. :) I'm a teacher, and my partner teacher is a first year, just out of college gal, and she loves OITNB... When she realized my Piper was born before the show came out, she actually bragged to her friends I used the name before it was "super popular" - it was so cute, lol!

  • You could compromise one of your favorite names and his character of choice name and mash it together. It would be a really unique name (:
  • Yes.. we are considering Charles Xavier aka Professor X from XMen. I've always had the name Charles picked out but one day my hubby suggested Xavier and I didn't even know it was a character name till I already agreed to liking it then randomly googled it. lol my husband was so excited thinking he pulled one over on me. I still like it though and like the idea of calling him the professor.
  • All of these names are awesome! I would love to have a nerdy literary name- but I have been considering classics like Austen inspired alongside my HP and LOTR ;) I was thinking Bennet (the Pride and Prejudice family) as a first name for either sex, and I also love the name Oliver (Dickens AND Disney AND Arrow AND HP), and was considering Lorien or Eowyn from LOTR for a girl too.

All of the fandoms you listen for Oliver are exactly why I love Oliver if we have a boy!
