boobs leaking

I'm 16 weeks pregnant I'm a ftm and my boobs are leaking clear what could it be ?

Re: boobs leaking

  • Mine just started doing that too. Someone else posted earlier that it's colostrum
  • I have crusty white stuff on my nipples sometimes. I believe it's colostrum, which is a substance similar to milk that your body makes about 3-4 months into pregnancy. It's like a pre-milk liquid. Sometimes it leaks early on, sometimes it happens just before birth. If you're unsure though you could always ask your doctor at your next check up.

  • It's totally normal. For some women it starts super early and for others it doesn't happen until closer to birth or even after baby is born.
  • I'm worried about this... I'll be bottle feeding...

    What worries you? @troopersmom
  • It'd just be nice if I don't leak... We leave for Europe for two weeks... Then I have family stuff to attend, etc... I haven't bought maternity clothes yet, I'm still not showing but breasts are much bigger. I would really like to not have colostrum or leakage for awhile..
  • There's tons of information for moms who will breastfeed but I can't find anything for moms who will bottle feed.
  • Oh gotcha. Yeah, this crusty nipple stuff is NOT helping me in the feeling sexy arena. I won't even tell my husband such a thing.

It would just creep him out. It creeps me out. STAY CLEAN! I CLEAN YOU SO YOU CAN STAY CLEAN.
  • @troopersmom: I know you're planning on bottle feeding, but you could look into getting some nursing pads to absorb any leakage. They're disposable and you can get fairly thin ones at most drug stores or big box stores. There are reusable ones, but they're a bit bulkier.
  • I was going to say pads. They aren't obvious either. They'll stop anything from coming out. I had it early and had my milk in my 7 months last time around. It might chill out a little so that's good.

@Mousemama thank you! And thank you for being nice-
I've been attacked lately- for choosing to bottle feed. Seriously thank you for helping me- I've been feeling down and it's nice to get your post- *hug*
Had to edit it posted prior to me being finished typing.
  • @troopersmom: I hate how some people think it's okay to say mean things to bottle feeding moms! There's absolutely nothing wrong with your decision! If you ever need to message me, I'm happy to chat.
  • Thanks lol I was so freaked out happy to know its normal
  • Welp, I'm gonna bottle feed and I dare someone to try me, lol.

But yeah, I started leaking and having the crusty busties too. I bought some reusable pads at Destination Maternity. They are cute and not noticeable. So yay.

  • My boobs have started leaking a bit at 16 weeks, glad to know its normal and you ladies are experiencing it too!
  • THANK YOU for posting this. I've had the crusty nipples off and on for at least 5 weeks.

I figured it was colostrum, but I would forget about it and not look it up to be sure.
  • I have had it too the thing that gets me through is the lanolin I can't get enough of it
  • Lol, crusty busties. Me too!

Crusty Busties ! Hahahhaha you just made my night.
    =))
  • @Mawmee: what sort of pads were they? I'd love to find some reusable ones that aren't gigantic!
  • @Mawmee Crusty busties!! =))
  • I use the disposable pads they are in the nursing aisle at Walmart
  • Go to the baby section of your Walmart/Target and to the bottle/formula area and buy some breast pads.  The leaking is totally normal and if you never offer the breast once baby is born your milk will dry up but there is no way to tell your body not to make the milk so you just have to deal with that the best you can.

Just tellin' it like it is lmao. The pads I got are by Itzy Ritzy and are about 4.5 inches in diameter. Not big enough to be cumbersome, but big enough for coverage and comfort. It was $14.98 for a pack of 6.

ETA: They are reusable (and absorbent, comfortable, eco-friendly, and apparently glamorous, according to the box).

Thanks! I've got constant high beams (lol!), so they might serve a dual purpose!
  • I had nipple piercings but took them out as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I do have white stuff coming out sometimes. I don't know if it's still from the piercing or actually the pre-milk. I always forget to mention it to my doctor.
  • @troopersmom I used the lansinoh nursing pads in my last pregnancy. I was breast feeding but they were pretty thin and I never noticed them through my shirt or anything. I don't have experience but just to let you know from what I have heard last time around and from other bottle feeding mommies, your milk will still "come in" after baby and so I'm guessing you'll be leaking a bit then too? I've heard for some it's super painful for the first week or two until your body realizes that you won't be using your milk. Just thought I'd prepare you a bit from what I've heard!
  • I've been doing it for weeks now because I had nipple piercings I took out. The liquid started coming out of those holes and now I have a hole in the center of each nipple. Its milky coloured stuff. I was freaking out until I looked online.
  • If you're not going to breast feed you can also try putting cabage leaves in your bra. It sounds weird, but it dries them up quickly and especially after baby comes it keeps you from having the hard painful breasts. A lot of people worry about smell and such and you can't smell them or see them, it's like they're not there. It usually only takes a couple days to dry all the way (after baby). @Mawmee @troopersmom
