Nursery Furniture

FTM here,
Starting to think about nursery furniture - I'd like to start putting money aside to put together a beautiful nursery.  What are some of the best stores to look at cribs, gliders, dressers, etc.  Also, what prices am I looking at - low and high end?  :) Thanks bumpies

Re: Nursery Furniture

  • With our first we did babies r us. I don't remember the exact cost but I know it was reasonable and we are happy with how it's held up. Dd's 18 months. And the dresser we just repainted an old cheap one we've had for years. Her theme was Horton Hears a Who so we repainted it light blue, green and pink just to make it fun and funky.
  • FTM here as well. I'm a minimalist - is it necessary to have a rocker or glidey chair?

  • I bought a glider rocker on Craigslist a while ago -- those can get expensive! I'm curious where to go as well but might check out Buy Buy Baby because of their affiliation with Bed Bath and Beyond -- always a coupon for stuff there! Though, I've heard really good things about the rewards program at Babies R Us. Any idea WHEN we should get this stuff?? I want to have the nursery all made up soon but my Mom is talking about planning the baby shower for early October! So late!! (I'm due between Oct 27-Nov 7...we find out officially in the beginning of April since my last ultrasound was inconclusive)
  • I couldn't have made it without my glider/rocker!

Call around to local furniture stores and see if they carry nursery furniture. Support the mom and pop stores if you can ;)

Youngamerica.com has some great close out prices on made in the USA (aka safe) furniture

I think this really depends on you and your LO. Do you plan on rocking or nursing? And... something you won't know until they're here, do they need to be rocked?

I really wanted one because I have always envisioned picture perfect bedtimes reading books and rocking and that's exactly what we do now :) But when he was an infant, it came in handy in the MOTN when I didn't feel like walking back and forth to get him to sleep, we rocked instead.

  • We bought a crib from a friend and refinished it ourselves. Then we received a glider rocker from our registry. One of my friend's brother made us a bookshelf like one that Pottery Barn Kids has (we paid for materials), and then we bought a dresser that doubled as a changing table. You really don't need much! PBK has a lot of adorable furniture ideas, but it's fairly expensive depending on your budget. Babies R Us has a lot of variety which is nice, too.

  • I agree. I couldn't have survived without my glider! I spaced out my larger purchases with DD for items I was not expecting to receive for my shower... I.e. Crib, stroller and glider. I got the nursery together fairly quickly over time because the last month (and for me, the last two months) really aren't fun to be stressed. I spent those last two months organizing and reorganizing her clothes, prepping for labor and D day and nesting/focusing on other parts of the house and making room since we were tight on space. IKEA has some great items that apparently have high safety ratings that won't break the bank

  • I have a rocker in my dd room. I use it not to read to her now that she is like 16 months old.. As for the beginning I preferred the side laying position for breast feeding so I never used it for her then. I suggest getting a crib that converts into a toddler bed that way u have one:)
  • I still rock my daughter everyday in our glider and she is will be 2 in May. Spent many nights rocking all night long, they are worth the investment in my opinion.

I found the crib and dresser I wanted at Buy Buy Baby and then ordered it from Walmart, for home delivery, for less then half the price.

  • My hubby is also anxious to start setting up a nursery. He read somewhere that you shouldn't start until the 2nd trimester, in case. Some people don't start until the third trimester. We've looked at cribs at buy buy baby and babies r us. Be careful going to both this early though, it can cause anxiety. So much to look at and realize you need! Cribs are 200-1000. Depends what you want. Some of the cheaper ones do NOT seem sturdy. You can find reviews online like in Amazon and YouTube. For some reason people don't shake the crib on some of the videos though. That's the first thing we did at the stores. I think a glider or rocker would be super comfortable for rocking the baby. Those seem to range 200-600. Think you can find those at furniture stores too though. And I forget who was talking about bed bath and beyond/buy buy baby you can definitely use bb&b coupons at buy buy. They're very knowledgeable there also! At least at our store she was explaining about the different mattresses. If you go in to buy buy or babies r us don't be afraid to ask questions. It was very informative.
  • Our crib was purchased on Craigslist, the brand is Orbelle, and similar ones are listed on Amazon for about $199. We have a 3-drawer dresser and a chest of drawers from Ikea as well as a bookcase that were mine before I got married. The glider is from Craigslist (and yes, it's a must-have for me!).

I didn't use the glider a ton in the beginning because it was easier to learn breastfeeding on the couch but I use it all the time these days. I rock DS to sleep for naps and bedtime as well as reading in it. I couldn't imagine not having one and will be getting a second for this LO.

  • We have my husband's crib from when he was a baby and which his parents saved all these years. This time though, I kind of want just a pack n play for a crib. We're in an apt and I see needing to move the baby around when we have guests or are training the kids to sleep in the same bedroom. Plus pacifiers can't fall out of a pack n play. I can't tell you how many times one of us would be hunting around under the crib at 3 am to replace a dropped paci.
  • @BritniB86 bed, bath and beyond coupons can be used at babies r us. Just letting you guys know. They can not be expired though. I use them expired at bed bath and beyond all the time.
  • @deanna1313, Awesome!!!! We always get those in the mail!! Thank you, I never knew that! We actually registered at Bed, Bath, and Beyond for our wedding and we had such a great experience -- that makes me feel great that I started my baby registry at Babies R Us!! :D

  • We ordered my daughter's furniture from Buy Buy Baby. A little bit of info for the ladies planning on ordering from there. It took 14-16 weeks for our particular furniture set to come in because it had to be manufactured. I'm sure not all brands are that way, but know you might need some time. Also, as far as coupons go, you cannot use the regular coupons that get sent in the mail on furniture (unless this has changed in 3 years). We could only use the coupons that we got for setting up a new account with them online. So we made up a bunch of fake emails and set up a bunch of fake accounts so we could have a coupon for each piece. Saved us a ton! The coupons also exclude certain brands of strollers, car seats, baby carriers, etc. So before you go to the store thinking you can use a coupon, read the fine print.

Get the book Baby Bargains! It's a must for any mom. They review basically every thing and every brand that is baby related. All the leg work/research is done for you. They tell you how safe, durable, etc things are, plus if the company has had recent recalls and what not.
