Measles

I received a call today about my initial blood work. The nurse said I was borderline immune to the measles. I find this a bit confusing because I received all of the vaccinations as a child. Anyway, I cannot receive the vaccination now because it contains a live virus and they don't want to do that when you're pregnant. They let me know I would be getting the injection after giving birth. Anyone have anything like this?

Re: Measles

  • Yes I've had to get the shot many times. Three pregnancies in a row they said I wasn't immune and I got the shot before leaving the hospital after birth. Its finally took the last time I've had no explanations as too why it didn't take so many times. I know I had the shot as a child as well. Lucky measles are rare these days as its dangerous to get while pregnant
  • I had a similar thing with chicken pox. I had the chicken pox as a child, but still wasn't immune, so I had to get the shot, too! Weird!!!

  • I've heard (after the recent measles outbreak) that if you only got one shot as a child (I think they started doing two boosters sometime in the 80s) that you may not have full immunity and could get a booster shot now to give you full immunity. But of course that would have to be done before or after you're pregnant like you mentioned.

From what I understand, it's not a booster, it's a second full shot. Some people (I think it was 5%) won't have an immunity after the first one. The likelihood of not developing an immunity after each subsequent shot drops but doesn't fully go away. Lacking an immunity is unlikely but not abnormal.

  • I'm a child of the early 80's so maybe I just had the one shot back then.

Thanks for all of the info. I'm glad that was the only issue that popped up from my blood work.
