Telling work.

I'm a teacher and a few weeks ago I started a full time contract job. My contract ends on November 27, but I won't be able to do that since I'm now having a baby in late September. The Pregnancy was a surprise but I want it, I don't know how to tell them. I'm also scared they'll fire me on the spot, and I need the job so I can save as much as possible for when the baby comes. How do I do this?

Re: Telling work.

  • I would recommend reading through your contract carefully.  Contracts are meant to protect both the employee and the employer.   That being said, under normal circumstances, it is illegal to fire a worker due to pregnancy.  Google the Pregnancy Discrimination Act for more info. However, the answers you need will probably be detailed in your contract.  In particular, you want to read about what happens if you cannot complete your contract.  Again, the law is most likely on your side...but contracted positions are different than non-contracted positions.  Arm yourself with information before you go in for that discussion.  Good luck!
