Breast Pump

Hello, we just found out we're having a little girl an couldn't be more excited. Though I'm concerned what's the best breast pump? I've had breast augmentation and I've heard from other moms that they ended up needing to rent a hospital breast pump to make sure all the glands were emptying out. If they don't your breast will get itchy and cause you a fever. I just wanted suggestions on breast pumps from moms that have already experienced pumping. It will be my splurge item on the registry!

Re: Breast Pump

  • If you have insurance you should check to see if they cover the cost. Since Obamacare most insurances are required to cover the cost. I just received my pump this week free through my insurance. It's my 3rd Medela pump in style, it's a double electric pump. They are wonderful. I also have had a breast augmentation and it worked well for me. I bought my first Medela PIS when I was pregnant with my 7yr DS. Loved it. And with my last pregnancy I received one free through my insurance. Little one is 10 months old and pump still works great. But since we switched insurance and they cover it in full I got another one, easier to have one set up in nursery and have one I can set up wherever I may go (pack to work, etc)
  • Medela pump in style electric pump, and I would also go with a manual pump as week of you can get it for a shower gift.

  • I used an ameda double electric purely yours with my first and loved it and their customer service! I, according to them, had small nipples and needed a part that made the suction cup area smaller because if it's too large, and you are small, you could have pain on pumping (which was why I called). They sent me the parts free, with overnight shipping and did a follow up call a few days later! Very impressed! I also liked that the milk didn't go through any tubes so less parts to clean :)
  • I agree with medala pump in style-love it

Just curious what would be the purpose if getting a manuel pump if you have the electric? I thought Manuel pumps were difficult?
  • Ladies, if you value your nipples being attached to your body, do NOT use a manual! I tried a medela manual and an ameda manual and I honestly thought it was trying to rip my nipples off.. Save your $$ and go electric. :)
  • My insurance offers other amess or medela pump in style. I'm going with the Medela. Congratutions on your girl! We still have to wait 3 more weeks to find out.

  • I would find out which brands your insurance covers and then call your hospitals lactation specialists- I did that would my first and they were super helpful in choosing the best brand. They may also have extra advice based on your situation.
  • I had a medela and it broke, bought a hygeia and my life has changed. It's 10X better and that's hard to say since I loved the medela a lot. But it really is much better.

  • I'd sugest getting your free one from insurence. It's a federal law- they have to cover one. If that doesn't work for you look into renting. I'd go with the symphony if you want to rent.

I bought a manual medela to use when out. DS was terrible at nursing in public. It was great bc I could just throw it in the diaper bag and pump a bottle when needed while out.

It was small, easy to clean, and quiet. Which I loved. I still had my PIS for home and when I went back to work. It was faster since it was a double.

Just don't buy the medela freestyle. It was terrible. The suction was worse than any pump. I once used my manual after it and got FOUR OUNCES that the freestyle had missed. I liked it bc if how compact it seemed. Biggest waist of money ever.

  • How do I get my insurance to pay for a breast pump??
  • You have to get a 'prescription' for a pump from your doctor and call a medical supply company. They can tell you which one your insurance covers.

  • Most insurance plans will cover a certain amount towards the purchase or the rental of a breast pump if your doctor writes you a prescription, which most have zero issue doing. I'd definitely give your insurance company a call as PP suggest.

We struggled with nursing at first and I so preferred the hospital grade rented pump to the one I purchased. The rental was a Medela Symphony and I think it was about $30 a month. It was quieter, did the job faster and was great for stimulating to increase supply. They are much bigger to lug around, come in a hard case and require an outlet to plug in. The Medela freestyle I used once going back to work still did the job, but was louder and harder on my nipples. Nice thing about the freestyle is you can throw it in any bag, it's so small, and the battery lasts a long time so you could all day without needing an outlet.

Either way register for a couple good pumping bras so you can be hands free and experiment with the breast shield size, as the correct one will make a world of difference in how fast/well your breast is emptied.
  • I just received my breast pump free of charge from my insurance company.

Freemie deluxe double pump electric, i was drawn to it due to the camouflage design. it sits right inside your bra! hope its a good one.
  • I liked the Medela double electric but had to get the smaller shields and I only ever used one side.
  • I got the Medela Starter free through insurance from Aeroflow Healthcare and love it!
  • I just requested the Medela pump in style advance starter kit from insurance. Super excited that they will pay for it.
  • I did mine thru the bump fill out form and answered emails and voila it was at my door in 10 days
  • I actually went to aeroflow website. https://www.breastpumps.aeroflowinc.com/qualify-through-insurance/

I filled out the info and then they sent me an email telling me the pumps my insurance covers. 3days time. Hopefully ill have my ameda truely yours shipped next week. I didn't have to call or contact anyone.

I already have a medela pump in style. So want to try a new one.
