Pregnant after IF

IF girl needing your advice...

I just had my first beta yesterday after 3 days off positive frer's. The level came back at 6.3. My RE didn't sound very hopeful but everything I've read online says anything over a 5 is good & the important thing is whether or not it's doubling. I go back in tomorrow for another draw. Should I prepare myself for the worst or is there still hope? Anyone have any experiences like this?

The only time I got a number like that, it doubled at the second beta and then didn't for the third. Chemical pregnancy. I hope yours works out better.

  • Hi there!  Are you in the states?  Normally 25+ is considered an official good number, although I've seen ladies start out below 20 and end up with happy, healthy babies.  If you had 3 days of positive frers and got a 6, it seems like you're on a different metric system?

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
    IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!
    Beta #s = 445;1,098; 9,545  -- EDD 5/2 -- Team Pink!
    Camila Josephine arrived 4/30 :)
  • Yes I'm on the US.
  • Unless you had your beta done really early, a low number would usually result in a chemical.  I've seen ladies with betas between 15-25 have success, but I'm not sure I've seen anyone below 15....I'm so sorry to sound so negative!!  Unless, like I said, you happened to go in for a beta really early.  I have heard that anything above 5 is considered pregnant.  It's just that usually by the time a doctor tests for beta (12-14dpo), they like to see above 25.  It is true that the most important thing is doubling time, so T&Ps that you just had a very late implantation and you get great news at your next visit.

  • Honestly, I'd say hope for the best, but prepare for the worst. My RE liked to see first betas over 100, but it'd also depend on how many days past IUI or transfer for IVF. I think I've seen a few betas start out pretty low, but I can't recall any quite that low. I was hopeful for two of mine that started out pretty low (78 and 35) and even though they doubled for a bit, neither ended up sticking. Sorry, but would rather you be prepared for both possibilities.
