Weekly Gestational Diabetes Check-In 2/15

As some of you may know, I will be delivering my baby prematurely by Wednesday, at the latest. I will continue to post updates on that, but if someone would like to take over the check-in, that would probably be better, since I will no longer be pregnant and thus will no longer be battling gestational diabetes. Silver linings, right?

Anywho...

GTKY: do you have any furbabies?

Re: Weekly Gestational Diabetes Check-In 2/15

  • When were you diagnosed? Around 25 weeks.

What worked for you this week? Hospital food. It's not bad here, they list all their carb counts, and maybe it's the fluids they've been pumping into me or something, but everything except my fasting numbers have been great.

What didn't work for you? Steroids. I had to have two doses to make sure baby's lungs are a little more developed, and went over on my fasting number yesterday (and probably will today, too). But my doses are now done with, so hopefully no more of that. Not to mention I'm already in the hospital, so they can manage that pretty well.

GTKY: do you have any furbabies? Sophie the kitty aka Sopherkins. She is my first baby. I've had her since she was 3 months old (now 11). I hope she likes being a big sis! Here is a photo of her drinking from the sink.

  • @Blergbot‌ I've been thinking about you and your LO. I'm glad to hear things are staying on the positive side. I will be happy to start doing the check-ins. Don't disappear though :-) we still need to know how you and your LO are doing!

    When were you diagnosed?
    A month ago (29 weeks)

What worked for you this week?
An increase in nightly insulin and not eating as many carbs as I should be (90-100 a day rather than 150-175) is the only thing that gave a complete day at/under target. I will be talking to my endo about using fast acting as well to help me eat more.

    What didn't work for you?
Fajita nachos. Even though the carb count fit and there was plenty of protein, they didn't agree with me and I had my highest reading yet at 150. And as an added bonus, I was over target at every reading the next day.

GTKY: do you have any furbabies?
I have a Bailey. She's a shih tzu/dachshund mix which is also called a Schweenie :-). She's terribly spoiled and I'm a little worried that she will be super jealous of the baby.
  • I'll be sticking around to give updates on Will and celebrate with the rest of you April mommas as your LOs arrive :) And I may pop in on this thread to offer my support and let you know how well I transition back from GD.

Thanks so much for your thoughts!
  • Glad to hear you're hanging in there, @Blergbot‌. Stay strong. I know how tough this is.

What worked for you this week?
I'm in the hospital with some complications. Like Blergbot, I've found that it's pretty easy to stay on track here. It sucks - I'm not going to lie - but my numbers have been on target.

    What didn't work for you?
Getting unexpectedly stuck in the hospital. Like I said, my numbers have been good. Just sucks to be here.

GTKY: do you have any furbabies?
I have a cat named Grissom.

    Have a good week, everyone!
  • Well wishes to you, too, @BuckyC‌!
  • Just saw your pic, @Blergbot‌. I think your Sophie and my Grissom might be long lost cat siblings!
  • When were you diagnosed?

    About three weeks ago.

What worked for you this week?
Peanut butter and gram crackers, cheese, a couple of hershy kisses after a meal

    What didn't work for you?
I was getting consistent good numbers for a couple of weeks, so I got cocky and had some pizza tonight. Nope! 137. White bread in any form is not my friend anymore.

GTKY: do you have any furbabies?
I have a pug named Jack. I consider him my first LO.

Good luck making it until Wednesday Blergbot. Have a great week everyone!

  • Best of luck for your delivery x

What worked for you this week?
    Oat bars, milky drinks.
    What didn't work for you?
Got a random 8.3 after my usual breakfast, as well as several higher after meal readings so they put me on tablets.

GTKY: do you have any furbabies?
No but i'd love a kitty, however i'm allergic and live in rentals so that's a no go on two fronts!
  • When were you diagnosed?
What worked for you this week?
Eating snacks on a pretty set schedule.
    What didn't work for you?
Valentine's Day dinner. I thought I had planned accordingly but I was definitely off because after testing I got 184! Not good! I'm waiting to get scolded for that one.

Thankfully that was my only really high number last week. I had a few 125 or under but that doesn't really concern me. At my appointment on Friday the doctor said I could cut back to just testing after lunch and dinner because my fasting and after breakfast numbers have always been great. I'll test fasting and after breakfast just once a week now. I think my after dinner number is higher is because I tend to eat more then.

GTKY: do you have any fur babies? We have the best kitty, Louis. He thinks he's a dog and plays fetch. I'm a little nervous to introduce baby to him but I think he'll be fine once he adjusts.

@Blergbot good luck!! Thinking of you and baby. Keep us posted when you have the time.
  • Diagnosed: 1 week ago at 30 weeks

What worked for me: hubby went grocery shopping and got me all kinds of wonderful foods and is extremely supportive and a fantastic cook. Still haven't met with Dr/dietician. Doing that tomorrow

What didn't work: being a teacher for valentines meant saying no to cupcakes and cookies and candy all day Friday. Le sign

Do I have any fur babies: I lost both of my dogs in the last 3 months, most recently last Tuesday. Quite sad about it but they both had long and happy lives. We will have another dog again someday.

I'm so sorry you lost your fur babies. Our cat is dying right now and it is so sad but to lose 2 pets so close together sounds absolutely heart wrenching. Lots of hugs to you.
  • I am visiting from May (due May 3), but didn't see a recent Gd check in over there, so I hope you gals don't mind if I join in here!

I was just diagnosed with Gd today. I am a little overwhelmed by the diagnosis. Honestly, I was shocked because I only failed my 1 hour by 1 point (I scored 136 and the cut off was 135) but I'm glad they caught me for my baby's sake. I haven't met with my nutritionist yet or got my monitor yet, but I'll start independently working on my diet as of tomorrow.

  • @rad3585 sorry you have to be in this group! But welcome! I also failed my 1 hour by 1 point! When I failed all 3 tests for the 3 hour (I only passed my fasting one) my doctor was shocked. She actually wondered if the tests were mixed up. You'll be ok though. It sucks but it's not nearly as bad as I thought it'd be. On the bright side it'll probably help us all keep a healthy weight since we can't eat all the crap that normally comes with pregnancy.
  • @rad3585‌ welcome! The check-in normally goes up on Sunday and we would love to have you! Did you do a 3 hour? Feel free to ask any questions you may have.
  • Update: went to the dietician today for the first time and I'm feeling really positive about how it went. I was being even harder on my diet then they are ( even said I can try a small amount of low fat ice cream) and got set up with my test kit. Only have to test twice a day and keeping a food journal doesn't bother me. I'm thinking that this is a good motivation for me to eat healthier after pregnancy too since I've always been a sweets person. It will help lose pregnancy weight if I'm already used to cutting out fast food and sugary stuff plus baby will soon be here:)
  • @kjone115‌ and @Ndm410‌ thanks for the welcome. Yes, I already did the 3 hour and failed. :( I go see my nutritionist tomorrow, so hopefully I will feel more positive after getting some answers.

  • @rad3585‌ I do think it helps to meet with the nutritionist. It's all overwhelming at first but it's totally doable and even though having GD is a pain, there are some positives to it. You will get the hang of it.
