Nap schedule

Just curious...do yall follow a schedule for nap time? If so, do you wake them up after so long if they're still asleep? I'm still just kinda following LO's lead and letting him nap when he's fussy (usually twice a day) and letting him sleep as long as he wants (sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes 3 hours). Thinking I should maybe start trying to get on a regular schedule. What do yall do?

Re: Nap schedule

  • Cecelia gets 2-3 naps a day; typically first one is between 10 and 11 and second one starts about 3 hours after the first one ends. We do a third nap around 5 if she had crappy naps (which is like every day at daycare!)
I never wake her up, if a nap lasts longer than 1 hour it's a blessing that I cherish!

I'm not planning on scheduled naps until she starts getting them at daycare which is around 15-16 months I think and they take one nap In the afternoon.

  • We try to get two naps in though she is pretty resistant to the second nap. Sometimes I find the only way I can get her to nap at all is to nap with her and then she sleeps as long as I do. This is great for getting a nap, not so great if I want to actually do stuff. But if she does nap without me, then I definitely let her sleep as long as humanly possible!

  • We do two naps right now--sometimes a third if it has been a rough day. The first nap is usually around 10 (give or take 30 minutes) and lasts 45 minutes most of the time, though up to 90 minutes if I am lucky! Second nap is 3.5 hours or so after the first one ends--so usually between 2 and 3. This last 45-90 minutes as well. I don't wake him, but if he ever slept past 4:30 I might, just because bedtime routine starts at 7.
  • 930 and 2 give or take 30 min. Lately she's been getting up so early that the first is closer to 9, but the nap is usually long enough she can make it close to 2 for the second. I will wake her up after 2 hours for either nap and at 4pm to preserve bedtime, but neither has happened many times. Bedtime routine starts at 6, asleep by 630. We haven't done a 3rd nap in months.
  • 2 naps, one around 9am, the other between 1-2 depending when she's tired. She usually naps a little over an hour for one and 30-45 minutes for the other. It depends. I would never wake her up from a nap, but she doesn't sleep long so I've never had to consider it.

  • My girls usually nap for 1.5-2 hours in the morning (9:30-11ish) and 45 - 90 min in the afternonon (around 2:30). I usually follow the clock for the first nap, but the second nap I watch for tired signs, or put them down after we have been out running errands .Occasionally the second nap doesn't really happen. They will just play in their crib for an hour. And occasionally the second nap starts late or lasts really long, but I only wake them if the afternoon nap goes past 5pm because I don't want bedtime

  • We just started having mainly one nap. Ds has been sleeping until 8:30. He will nap about 1 or a little earlier and sleeps about 2 hours. Today he slept 3 hours. If he wakes up early we do a short morning nap. With the one nap schedule though he has been sleeping 8-830 with one wake up about 5 for a bottle.

    That sounds dreamy!!!
  • I've just been following LO's lead and a rough schedule has evolved. Generally he goes down for a nap two hours after getting up, and goes down for a second nap three hours after getting up from his first nap. I never wake him up; he usually sleeps 45-90 minutes. If he's had a crappy nap day or if we've been out and about and his naps have been messed up, I'll put him down for a late afternoon nap.

Insert random complaint here about how LO has been getting up 45 mins earlier this week. I'm tired!
  • Usually just 1 nap here for about 1.5-2hrs. She wakes around 7:15am, naps around noonish then start putting her to bed by 6pm, asleep within 30min. She is with me all day, and we are usually running around. I teach fitness so we hoo around gym to gym. She will take catnaps in car sometimes. When we are home on weekends I can get an extra crib nap. But, sleeps 12-15hrs a night so I am happy!

  • We do that 2-3-4 schedule, which LO pretty much dictated. First nap is 2 hours after AM wake up, second nap is 3 hours after he wakes up from that nap, then bedtime 4 hours after that, someone here suggested it, and it works well fur us.

  • I had never heard of the 2-3-4 schedule until recently. But then I realized LO follows that naturally. I just watch for her cues, but it generally follows that.
  • I recently clicked in to the 2-3-4 schedule. It's basically what was happening naturally, but now that I'm aware, I try to actually follow it. It generally works well. On a good day, naps are 1-1.5 hours. The afternoon gets messed up most frequently because I usually take our 3 year old out for an activity and so LO sleeps when we get home. Sometimes it's late, but it doesn't seem to mess up bedtime too much since it's between 8-9. Lately he's been waking up around 8am and that's throwing things off since we were pretty settled on a routine based on a 7am wake up. They like to mess with us...
  • It sounds like we're with everyone really. One nap in the am 2-3 hours after she wakes up second nap is 3 hours after that. I'm in a terrible habit of holding her while she's napping but I'm working on it I swear. We do bed time 630-7.
  • @Sporty1216‌ It seems to work for us. I am just waiting for more teeth or something to mess it up! Haha

Our situation is very similar to this^^

How did you make the transition to one nap? My LO refused his morning nap but took a long one (until I had to wake him to go to a work meeting) this afternoon. I feel like he might be moving in that direction. Did your LO just drop the first nap by refusing to sleep, or did you help guide the schedule?

This except DS sleeps 1-2 hours in the morning and 1.5-3 hours in the afternoon.  I don't wake him up.  Doesn't seem to matter how long he sleeps he still goes down at 7pm for bedtime.

  • @Sporty1216‌ I was pretty desperate to get some more sleep over night so I just sorta dropped the morning nap to see if it would help. I feel like he was sleeping too much during the day. For the first few days we had rest time where we sat and read books while he had some formula and he did fall asleep for about ten mins. Now he just brings me books and we sit and read them for about 20 mins. He is always on the go but loves our rest time. At first he was tired by lunch time but we powered through it. Now he is totally fine without his morning nap. It is so nice because by about 1230/115 he lays down and goes right to sleep!

That sounds kind of nice! Maybe I will give that a shot on those days when the second nap time isn't happening.

Thanks, @Katy0525‌ That sounds really nice. If I see more signs that LO is done w two naps, this sounds like a really nice idea for how to shift towards one.
