Re: Weekly Gestational Diabetes Check-in 2/8

  • When were you diagnosed? Around 25 weeks, I think...

What worked for you this week? Going to physical therapy and taking insulin when needed. I was getting too hung up on the whole insulin thing, but after meeting with my counselor she reassured me that I've had a rough couple of weeks and to not be so hard on myself.

What didn't work for you this week? My numbers are still out of whack, but I've been okayed for prenatal yoga and swimming, so hopefully they will get back to manageable soon.

GTKY: Having a boy? Girl? Team Green? We are having a boy named William.

  • I was diagnosed at 29 weeks and am 32 weeks now.

Upping the protein in all my meals has been really good for me this week.

What's not working for me is that I'm still struggling with my fasting numbers.

I am having a girl but haven't decided on a name yet :-)
  • Diagnosed at 28 weeks. I'm 31 weeks and 3 days now.

I keep trying to find new snack ideas because I found that snacking throughout the day really does help. I got some Granny Smith apples and fun gjetost cheese and that's been a welcome change. I have also decided that if all four numbers were good I can have half a cup of ice cream for a snack.

What doesn't work is missing a snack. It just tends to mess with my numbers. Also, attending a bday party where every food option was super carb heavy.

We are team green! If it's a boy he'll most likely be named Rocco. For a girl we're learning towards Zoe.
  • What worked for you this week?
    Vietnamese rolls, steaks and salads
What didn't work for you this week?
    Almost everything.

GTKY: Having a boy? Girl? Team Green?
A boy here :)  Edward shall be his name!

Side note i pricked my finger and it squirted me in the face dramatically (obviously not much) like something out a bad horror movie. I was needless to say very confused.
  • Diagnosed at 28-ish weeks.
What worked? Making sure to get in 3 meals and 3 snacks diligently.
What didn't work? Controlling fasting numbers and celebrating my birthday. :(
I'm having a boy (my 3rd). We're not sure of a name yet, but leaning towards Jayce Joshua.

  • Does anyone feel differently if they have too many carbs or sweets? After lunch at Chick-Fil-A two weeks ago my blood sugar was 224 which is outragiously high. Even though my number was off the chart I felt completely normal. The only time I feel off is if I wait too long to eat and my blood sugar drops too low.
  • In the 2 days after my 3 hour but before my diagnosis, I noticed that each time I ate sweets I felt really bad and my eyes hurt. It was odd since I hadn't noticed it before. Maybe it was a glucola hangover or something. Other than that, I've never felt off.
  • When were you diagnosed?
    I think it's 4 weeks. Can't keep track.

What worked for you this week?
Being extra careful and going for snacks with more protein.

What didn't work for you this week?
TMI alert -- I've been sick since Saturday with stomach issues. BRAT diet is all carbs, so I haven't eaten much which I think is making me feel worse. My doc says I should try bland protein, but the thought of eating a poached chicken breast makes my stomach churn.

We're having twin girls. We can't decide on names though!

Wow. Did you double check that number? I once had a reading of 257 because I had residue from a lemon on my fingers. I washed my hands and retested and it was 110 or something totally normal. At any rate, I hope you called your doctor.

As for feeling bad, not really. A couple of times I've had a slight headache coincide with a high number, but who knows if they were related. I definitely feel bad if I wait too long to eat.
  • @Blergbot‌ no I didn't recheck. I didn't even think to do that bc it was right after I got my meter. I didn't call the doctor but we conferenced after I faxed my numbers in for the week. They didn't seem concerned bc that was the only time I spiked. I go in on Friday for a follow up so I'll bring it up again then.
  • Been a while since I checked in.

    31+4 diagnosed at 27-28

Not a lot worked well this week. I was high all week long.

The cake at my shower did not work well for me!

    Team green.

I've been getting into the habit of retesting if my numbers are high. Wash hands and retest. Can make a HUGE difference.

What worked for you this week? Keeping a box of peanut butter crackers right by my bed, and eating a handful as soon as I wake up...otherwise my blood sugar levels creeped below 60 and I started feeling shakey.
What didn't work for you this week?
Oh pizza. I love you but I hate what you do to my levels!!!

GTKY: Having a boy? Girl? Team Green? Having my first little boy! So excited.

Could we possibly share snack/meal ideas next week because I'm running out of ideas.....
  • Dx about 3 weeks ago

Started glyburide at night to get my fasting numbers down. Working like a charm.

Went out to a movie theatre they serve dinner at, and made poor choices Fri night. My cbg was 149. My only other spike that week was 125 after breakfast so nutritionist didn't scold me.

    Having a boy.

@meganmcmuffin‌, mh bought me some "skinny girl" nutrition bars. I've only tried the chocolate/peanut butter/sea salt but it's very yummy.
  • @meganmcmuffin- let's share snacks now haha! That's where I tend to get bored and lazy. For a quick and easy snack I've been having different KIND bars or Fiber One bars. If I have more time I'll have a rice cake with peanut butter, a granny smith apple with gjetost cheese, string cheese and almonds, sugar-free pudding, an apple with peanut butter or a clementine.

Ohhhh I'll have to try those! I always want a sweet treat and can't think of something quick to grab...so those would be perfect! @fourthsacharm‌

@kjones115‌ does the clementine spike your sugar levels? I've had a hard time with fruit...even apples and peanut butter hasn't worked :( I miss fruit so much. I have gotten away with a few tbsp of raisins in my oatmeal but that's about it.

    My current favorite snack options:
Hummus and carrot/celery sticks Peanut butter and 9 grain crackers
    Cheese and 9 grain crackers
    Popcorn
    Mixed unsalted nuts
Low carb bagel-thin (it's a sad attempt of being a bagel) and cream cheese.

  • @meganmcmuffin‌ i haven't noticed fruit spiking my levels. I tend to stick to fruit later in the day though so that may help. And the clementines are so small so that may have something to do with it.

Popcorn sounds like a good snack. Quick and easy. I miss bagels so much! I should try the bagel thins.
  • Sorry been MIA for a while. Life got busy! Having a hard time keeping up with both boards.

When were you diagnosed? Around 14 weeks.
What worked for you this week?/What didn't work for you this week?
Not much worked this week. Started Insulin last week and it hasn't been helping. My fasting numbers are out of control and my evening numbers are creeping up as well. I have to go in this morning again and will most likely have my insulin dosage upped. Ugh!

What worked for you this week? Not missing any snacks and keeping consistent times with each of my meals. Also, I bumped my breakfast from 15g back up to 30g of carbs. My dietitian said that I should try to keep it at 30g, even though my numbers are higher in the morning she said they were still OK.

What didn't work for you this week? missing a snack made my next meal numbers higher. Also, my fasting numbers seem to slowly be going up :(  I have a note into the dietitian to see if I need to be changing anything. I also had a spike after one meal but after washing hands and testing again it was normal.

Having a boy? Girl? Team Green? Girl, Olivia Jayne :)

I know it isn't a snack but this recipe has worked for my breakfast numbers. I have also been having trouble thinking of new snack ideas. Popcorn sounds good, I will have to try that one too!

    Banana pancakes recipe:
    1 3/4C lowfat milk
    about 2 medium bananas (mashed)
    2 eggs
1 1/2C Bisquick (if using heart smart version soak oats in milk until softened)
    1 teaspoon Vanilla

Whisk all ingredients together and cook 1/4C serving size pancakes. I can have 2 of these pancakes with no syrup, just butter. (I refuse to by sugar free syrup, lol) I like to eat it with a serving of scrambled eggs. I have had this meal twice and my numbers are in the 130's for the 1hr test.

  • @meganmcmuffin‌ does fruit spike your insulin all the time or only in the morning? I just asked my nutritionist about this yesterday and she said that diabetics are usually more fructose intolerant in the morning. Also it's normal for our numbers to rise as our pregnancies progress, so even though I can handle cottage cheese and fruit for breakfast now, that might not be the case in a couple of weeks. Although I'm checking my sugar in 5 minutes so I might have just jinxed myself.
  • My go-to snacks are:

    String cheese
Cheese and crackers (this one isn't working so much for me right now, but it did in the beginning)
    Celery and almond butter
  • I am pretty much obsessed with Coconut Bliss dark chocolate and strawberry flavored 'ice cream' bars. They're low glycemic and a perfect late night treat. Plus, they taste nice and creamy.

    @somewheresublime86‌ , those sound awesome!
I went to the grocery store yesterday. Didn't see any coconut bliss. Ben&Jerry's was on sale for only $2.99/pint. I bought 4 but I use my kitchen scale to weigh how much I'm putting in my bowl so I know I only have one serving and about 30g carbs
  • Hey all. Was diagnosed with GD today (30 weeks today as well). Unfortunately our mat clinic here is only open 2 days a week and I don't get to talk to the doctor until next Wednesday. Any advice on how to get started would be helpful. Didn't have it my first pregnancy. Le sigh.

Cut way back on carbs and sugar (even fruit).

Here are the standard carb allowances:

    15-30g for breakfast
15g per snack (morning, afternoon and bedtime)
    60g for dinner and lunch

Hope that helps until you can get a meter!
  • You need carbs so don't stop eating them. Use the guidelines @Blergbot‌ gave but try to get them from real food. A lot of times it matters just as much the type of carbs as the amount. Just think: healthy, well rounded diet spread out into 3 meals and 3 snacks. Try to eat every few hours within these guidelines.
  • @astrat017 sorry for the bad news! It's totally managable though and testing my blood sugar 4 times a day hasn't even been that bad. It was scary at first but you just get used to it.

Make sure you eat your snacks. I notice my numbers are off if I skip a snack. For snacks we were actually discussing a few things in this thread. Drink at least 8 8 oz. glasses of water a day. Avoid all sodas and juices. If you want fruit try having it later in the day and know that bananas contain a lot of carbs. Read labels like it's your job. Protein and fiber are your friends. I'm no doctor but these are the things my dietician and doctor told me.
  • Thanks ladies. I appreciate the advice a great deal.
