Just for Fun: Crib Bumper????

Just wondering which ladies are going with a bumper or NOT!!!  I have read so much, and am driving myself crazy over it.........haha!

First baby I bought the whole room set- never used any of it- total waste of money. I used a breathable bumper & loved it.

Lately, it is not recommended due to increased risk of SIDS.  So to me, it's not worth it.  If you want to get it for decoration and remove it when the baby is in there, go for it.  Or some ladies have gotten the mesh bumpers as the baby gets older and moves around more.

NOT! The non-mesh bumpers are banned from being sold here. I've seen the mesh ones and didn't really consider getting those either. I guess they might prevent LO's arm or leg getting caught in the rails, but wouldn't provide much for bumps. While DS bumped into the rails or stuck his arm or leg out, he was fine.

I bought the mesh ones, thinking they should keep the babies from sticking their limbs between the rails.  I think it's crazy that they even sell the padded bumpers around here, because I've read a number of times that they've been linked to SIDS.  I don't understand how B'RU continues to sell these.

Because women (including myself at one time) think they are cute and buy them & BRU just wants to make money...

Nope, just buying a crib sheet and mattress pad. I may consider buying one once he gets older, but we'll see.

That's what I couldn't understand...I've read so many negative things but it seems like EVERY crib set includes them some how?! I just didn't know why they were even an option!

The mesh ones aren't blessed by the sleep gods either. Still considered risky, although a lot of women use them when the babies are older (less risk of suffocation at that point) and start getting caught in the rails.

Anyone know about the top rail cover thing? Is that just for decoration, or does it serve a purpose? Is it safe?

Not using one. Maybe when he gets older and past risk of SIDS I'll think about getting a mesh one if it seems that it would be helpful.

You could consider looking on etsy just to purchase a crib skirt and sheets (and maybe a matching blanket for a chair) so you don't get stuck with a set where you can't use a lot of it. I know there are plenty of etsy sellers that do a la carte buying or can customize an order with only what you want in it. I am going to attempt to make a crib skirt out of fabric I bought and then just buy some crib sheets off amazon.

I'm not planning on using one. I might consider a mesh one once baby starts moving around.

@pblge I believe the top rail covers are to protect against chew marks while teething. Someone is more than welcome to correct me if I'm wrong though. We're planning on going to work on our registry this weekend so I'm hoping to learn a lot more about everything!

@pblge‌ if it's what I think you're talking about, I had them on DS' crib to prevent chewing on the wood.

@Mrs.Willie - where can you find the teething guards? Obviously we have time since LO has yet to arrive. Also - are the sizes standard? It is on my list of to dos for later - along with childproofing (so much to do before and since baby won't be moving for at least 4 - 6 mos we figured we would tackle that stuff starting around month 4) Thanks!

We bought the sheets, crib skirt and quilt. I obviously won't place the quilt in with the baby, but I plan to use it as decoration on the chair we are using for nursing/reading.
Our crib from pottery barn kids came with a plastic cover on the top rail.

I'm not going to buy one... don't think they are sold around here, as they're forbidden in my province (in Canada). 

Here, it is the same for everyone: three days after you come home from the hospital with the baby you are visited by a nurse, who checks and makes sure the baby is gaining weight, and that his environment is safe. I've been told if you have crib bumpers (mesh or not) they make you take them off because of the link to SIDS.

@Lady2010 a lot of stores carry them. I got mine at Kohls with a coupon, but also BRU, Target, Buy Buy Baby, etc. If you search their sites for "crib rail covers" or Google it, a bunch will come up. I think they're all one standard length, but there ones for convertible cribs and others for the cribs with the narrow rails. There are a ton of patterns, solids, etc. so lots to choose from.

Never bought one, never missed it! A is almost 2 and she never got stuck. I think the risk alone would be enough to make people not buy them.

Bumpers are adorable and definitely complete the room. That said, we have not and will not use a bumper of any kind. Our daughter is almost 20 months now. We have had no issues with her getting her arms or legs caught between the slats. She always sleeps in a sleep sack and that seems to work perfectly. We didn't use blankets in her crib until she was over 12 months old. Still no stuffed animals, no pillows. I see no reason to rush into these things. You can play around with bedding designs on Carousel Bedding's website. You buy a la carte and can play around with mock-up designs without the bumper.

Re: bumpers - we didn't get any - figured since they aren't safe, there was no point. We also didn't get a crib skirt...just didn't feel we needed it. And I figured it would be one more thing I had to change and wash regularly. Lol.

Just crib sheets for us. And we will use sleep sacks. Though baby will be in a bassinet in our room the first few months.

I must admit that I was very disappointed when I was pg with DD and read how dangerous they were.  I always envisioned the "perfect" nursery, which included pretty girly bumpers for the crib.  When I read that, the bumper idea was thrown out the window....Her room still looked beautiful w/o the dangers of them!  I do have friends who still used them.  I was/am a nervous nelly mom and I would have had to sleep in her room at all times!  Just not worth any risk!

I had a friend use the crib bumper as a window treatment and it was really cute and still completed the room. Just a thought if you get a set wtih one and don't want to throw it out.

No way will we be using one. They're illegal in some states. I'd rather my baby be safe than their room look cute.
