'Stealing' a middle name

Before my I brought this up to my brother/SIL, I wanted a Bump opinion. What are your thoughts on using the same middle name as a family member did for their child? It would bother me for cousins to boast the same middle name - and it was actually in our first name spot before they used it as my nieces mn. Would you use it? I would definitely ask their opinion first. Thanks!

  • My first name is my cousin's middle name, she is two years older. We love it!

  • It's a middle name. It doesn't matter. Go for it!

This may end up being the case for our LO. I'm totally cool with it!

  • Many of the kids in my extended family have the same middle name... My daughter included. It's a tradition for us and connects the kids in a special way.

  • I see no problem with this, especially if it's a "family name". Even if it's not, I still think it's perfectly fine to use.
  • I think it's fine! It's like they'll have the same first name, which I could see getting confusing.

  • I have so many cousins... names overlap. Not a big deal.

It shouldnt be a problem - my sister and I always imagine the moment a few years in the future when our children notice that they have the same middle name. We named them after our parents. As previous posters implied ... it helps to establish a connection of sorts.
  • My BIL used the same middle names for his first two kids as we did. :-/ honestly, the first time it didn't bother me so much because it was a close family name. The second one it just pissed me off bc it was a more distant family name and there were lots of others they could have picked from. I also think if they would have asked our thoughts first, I probably wouldn't have cared so much. Maybe see what their thoughts are?
