FTM being nervous about newborn cold

Hi all

Any mums with experience with their newborn having a cold?

My bub is 2 weeks old and have noticed today his breathing is a bit different and sniffly like he has a cold. He has a boogie up one nostril but my booger sucker isn't getting it out. Any other suggestions how to get it out? I can't reach to pick it out either.

He's also being more fussy then usual and the only way I can seem to calm him is to nurse him but I'm nervous of overfeeding him and giving him a sore gut.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense the lack of sleep not helping my ability to function.

Thank for any advice

  • Nursing him is good if it is a cold. It will actually help his congestion. The other thing you can do is squeeze a couple drops of breastmilk, gently, into his nostril. Just squeeze it right from your breast and it will loosen up the mucous
  • Use saline drops (we bought the ones from Little Remedies at CVS) and then try the nasal aspirator again. We've been having issues with our LO since birth (she's 3 weeks monday) with mucous/snot/congestion.

  • Nurse your baby as much add he wants. You can't over feed a Nb. They won't eat if they are not hungry.

Maybe try a nose frida? They. Are. Amazing!
Otherwise, I'd just leave it alone. It'll make its way out.

  • I second the saline drops like @elleswarth‌ said. They help get out even the stickiest boogies. Our LO gets super fussy when her nose is congested.

  • And a humidifier! My LO is congested from the dry winter air and that seems to help.
  • We live in Australia so it's super hot at the moment :) but I'll try and look and see if anywhere around here sells the saline drops and try that. It just breaks my heart seeing him fussy or upset so hopefully it goes away soon. Thanks for your advice :)

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • You should really try the breastmilk too though. It's just as good! I will even use it on my older kids during times when I actually have a supply. It's more gentle than the saline too. They really do cry a lot less from it.
