Food for Afternoon Shower

Hi all.  My parents are throwing my husband and I our shower in mid March and they were asking for our input on some ideas for food.  Since we were asked for input, I feel its ok to throw out some ideas and obviously let them make the final decision.  They are having the shower from 3-6 so they were not sure if they needed to go with full entree trays like chicken parm/pasta/meatballs etc...or if more finger foods like pizza, chicken fingers/wings, pigs in a blanket, meatballs would be acceptable.

Just wondering what your thoughts are or what you have done in the past for food for an afternoon shower.

In my opinion since its between typical lunch and dinner times that dips, snacks, and appetizers are fine

Ok thanks.  My parents had to do a later time because the place we are having the shower at is about an hour away from them so they wanted plenty of time to pick up my Grandmother who lives about 45 minutes from them, and then enough time to pick up the food, and still have time to set everything up at the shower venu.

They don't care about getting actual trays of food, but were more just wondering what type of food would be easiest to keep warm and would be better to serve.  They are also planning on doing appetizers/snacks for when people arrive such as chips, fruit/cheese, pretzels, etc and some desserts so they just weren't sure what the middle course should consist of.

I think apps, heavy apps if they want, are fine. The second options you listed all sound great for something that's late afternoon. Since it's over at 6, that's plenty of time for people to eat dinner after. I would guess it somewhat depends on your crowd, but with mine 'dinner' doesn't start until at least 6, but more often 7.

I agree with choosing more substantial appies. So long as there is enough food, people will snack until they are full. I doubt anyone would go home at 6 and need to eat right away after snacking for a few hours.

My shower will be from 2-4. My mom is making meatballs, smokies, spinach dip, (maybe rotel dip), deviled eggs, croissant chicken salad sandwiches,  fruit, veggies, small candy bar, cake and cup cakes

I'm co-hosting one at 3-5 pm and just doing cake, veggie tray, fruit tray, cheese tray and crackers, nuts and candy. There are 40+ people coming so I'm keeping it light on food.
Something I learned from my wedding is people always go for hot food. We ordered cold dishes for 1/2 the amount of people and they still didn't eat all of it. The meat (had just enough) was gone in moments and all hot apps were gone quickly.

I think you are fine with heavy or light apps. Most people won't expect to eat a lot at a shower so won't come hungry.

Personally, I would serve some more entree type foods in a buffet style, since your Shower runs from late afternoon to 6pm at night. Showers are long and drawn out...I know I would need more than carrots and dip!
