Egg white allergy and breastfeeding

So I gave LO boiled egg white and she had a bad reaction... :(

She's 8.5 months old. I think I got mixed up. I thought egg was ok to give generally?

Well dr said to give her formula and no breastfeeding since the egg protein can pass into the milk.

I'm going to make an appointment with an allergist, but I'm really sad about not being able to breastfeed.

Has anyone already dealt with this?

How long until I can breastfeed again after eating egg?

  • Allergic reactions tend to get worse with each exposure so it's possible she had more mild reactions to it before.

I ate a lot of egg during maternity leave, but not often since except in cooked products.
  • That seems strange to me to suggest you stop breastfeeding and only give formula.  I would think that you should keep breastfeeding but stop eating any eggs...?

Had you been supplementing with formula or is this the first time LO will have it?

  • They said to stop until egg cleared my system, but didnt know how long it would take.

I'm waiting for calls back from her pediatrician and allergist office to see about making an appointment.

    She'd never had formula ever...
I worked really hard to keep EBF going and she's not letting me pump. I'm home alone and she cries if I put her in her chair and gets into everything but her toys if I let her run around.

She finally fell asleep so I'm going to try again
  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this and you're alone.  I hope you hear back from the doctors soon.

  • DS had a very mild egg allergy (hives that went away on their own within 30 minutes of eating) and he's EBF. Our pediatrician never mentioned cutting eggs out of my diet; he had his reaction a few months ago and I still eat eggs and don't see any issues with my son.

  • Pediatrician called back and said to resume breastfeeding. So only 12 hours of wasted milk... Could be worse.

Come to think of it. There was a dr just finishing her shift that stopped in and I nursed in front of her and she said to keep nursing. She has a kid with allergies.

The other dr said to stop for an unknown period of time.

Glad I didn't go buy formula! I hope lo doesn't get constipated from what i gave her. i cried giving it to her. I didn't think I cared that much...

Ill stay away from eggs for now until I see the allergist.

Pediatrician said vaccines should be fine too despite egg sensitivity.
  • That's good to hear!

  • @nicolemackenzie My son received both of the flu shots and never had a reaction. My ped explained that the protein is so denatured in the shot that it's unlikely to cause a reaction unless the allergy is pretty severe. Since my son doesn't have a problem eating egg if it's well cooked (denatured) in something, the ped didn't see a problem in giving him the flu  shot.

  • Good. I am strongly pro vaccination unless it would be dangerous
  • W has an egg allergy and I BF with no issues. She also doesn't seem to react to cooked egg in things, I'm just avoiding giving her actual eggs. I eat eggs infrequently, just not like...a whole quiche or something crazy. She's having an allergy test next week to confirm the severity of the allergy.

Anyway, glad to hear that you talked to a rational person! Hoping LO is fine otherwise- welcome to the EpiPen club :)
  • So glad you can continue nursing. I have a kinda dumb question for all of you with Kiddos with allergies: how did you find out what LO was allergic to? Because of an adverse reaction or did you get some sort of testing done?
  • Lo got hives and a rash and excorcist vomited shortly after eating egg.

Will see an allergist in a couple weeks.
  • DS got hives just around his mouth (7 months?) while eating eggs, they went away without benadryl and we opted to not have an epipen. He'll be tested at a year to confirm if he has an egg allergy via blood work.
