BF Moms who eliminated DAIRY and soy- what clued you in?

Long story here but the bottom line is my mom is insisting that my LO is gassy because he can't process dAIry and soy. He's also needed some rectal stimulation in the last few weeks to keep him poopping regularly. My mom swears his inability to process dAIry and soy is the reason. My pediatrician says no- some babies just need the stimulation and it's not related to what they eat unless you see blood in their stool or notice a rash.

I'm curious what behaviors in your LOs clued you mamas in to try elimination.

EDITED: correcting autocorrect failures regarding diary vs dairy. I didn't pick up on the typo through my tears as I typed my original post. Sorry.

  • Green mucous with blood in his diaper. A rash on his face followed a few days later.

  • DD had a dairy intolerance that we discovered when she started having blood in her stools. She wasn't very fussy or gassy.

We suspect the twins might as well since they are very gassy. I have reduced, but not eliminated dairy.

I asked what the chances were that the twins would get it since dd did. He said it was slightly higher. He also said they might not have the same symptoms.

  • Had milk tea two days straight and she was fussy those two days, plus suddenly a diaper rash. Stopped milk altogether and she was all better!
  • Green mucousy poop with blood in it. She was also really gassy and fussy. The gassiness and fussiness was since birth but the green mucousy poop with blood didn't show up until she was four weeks old. I cut out dairy soy and eggs and boom happy baby.

  • For those of you that cut out dairy, did it take going 199% dairy free? As in no chocolate or products with butter?

For me it was only straight up cows milk that made her fuss. But chocolate, some ice cream has been fine.
  • Same as a pp, the few different days I had dairy DD was up crying all night. She just wasn't the same baby. Once I eliminated it out of my diet she was back to her normal, happy self again. For me I avoid milk, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, etc. Butter has been ok & so has chocolate. I've also read that when milk is used for cooking the milk protein is eliminated. So far that holds true. We have made the scalloped potatoes that call for milk & I didn't have any issues with eating that. Not sure if others can weigh in on that one, though

I don't eat milk, ice cream, butter on my bread, yogurt, or any other dairy products. I can eat things like cookies with butter in them, but if I overdo it like I did at Christmas I definitely notice a change in her. I will throw a tablespoon or so of butter into sauce or rice but that is about it. We started to see significant improvements about a week after eliminating dairy but didn't see full improvement almost 3 weeks after.

  • DS was extremely fussy and gassy. I'm still not entirely sure if dairy was the problem, but I'll wait it out a few more weeks to see. When I stopped eating dairy, I noticed a big change in his personality for the better. His tummy wasn't swollen with gas anymore, and the red rash around his anus got better. I'll try reintroducing dairy in a week or two to make sure that the problem was dairy.

H is allergic to dairy, so I think I'm a little paranoid about it. Also, BIL is studying to become a nutritionist, and when I told him that I cut out dairy to help with the baby's gas, he said, "Oh, great. I was going to recommend that, but I didn't want to offend you."

I still allow myself one serving a day. It may be in the form of chocolate or a yogurt. I haven't had cheese or straight up cow's milk in a latte or anything, though.

  • I'd try eliminating narrower categories as well. LO had a period where she was pooping a tiny bit (enough to need a diaper change and exacerbate her rash) every 5-10 minutes and the pediatrician had me eliminate dairy for 48 hours, then slowly introduce things back in. It turned out that LO doesn't like the cultures used in French cheese (got a French cheese basket for Christmas). So it might be a certain yogurt (with active cultures) or cheese, not just dairy (if it's an allergy or sensitivity at all, of course).

  • I had to eliminate my diary because, you know, who has time to write down their inner most thoughts and feelings while dealing with a newborn?

I think what clued me in was my fourth entry regarding sleep deprivation while trying to write with the pen in my mouth (since I don't ever have free hands). At that point, I realized I needed to be free of my diary. :(

Forgive me for not picking up the typos that autocorrect changed. I was typing through tears when I made my original post.
