April 2015 Moms

just had a baby last feb and having another one in 4 months

I gave birth to a 2 lb 7 oz baby boy last February. He came oyt early due to the high protiens in my liver. They did a mri on his head and told us he had septo optic dysplasia. They told us he might not be able to see . Well almost 11 months later my son is 23lbs and 5. Oz. And im due to welcome another son in April. Now my dr is telling me my new baby might have this problem as well. Im scared because its a rare gentic disorder that normal doest happen in the same family. Im looking for mom who might know anything about this.

  • I diagnose students with special needs, and I will say, in my experience, I have never seen a case where the family has siblings with the exact same genetic disorder/abnormality. I have been in practice for 7 years and we discussed it at length at school. However, having said that, I have seen families that have siblings that have seperate disorders that can be linked to the same genes. Maybe your doctor was trying to make you aware there is a possibility, but without further testing/genetic mapping, no one can give you any kind of answer. Honestly, depending on your personality, it might not matter as there is nothing you can do about it, knowing or not knowing before birth. Just being aware and paying attention to milestone development is the only thing that will matter for early identification and intervention. I hope you find someone to relate with, as I know it is stressful to worry about the health of your upcoming baby.

  • No experience, and I am so sorry to hear you're facing this. Might there be any genetic tests that you could have done that could set your mind at ease or give you some answers? I'm not sure if there's anything that could be done, but Karyotyping and Microarray tests search for all types of rare diseases and syndromes; not sure if you've already gone that route or seen a genetic counselor -- mentioning it in case it might be worth asking your doctor about. Keeping you and your LO in my thoughts!
