April 2014 Moms

Helmet moms

So we just got hazels helmet off right bf Xmas after being in it for 3.5 months. We were really good about keeping her in it 23 hrs and after being in it this long we were all ready to be done. She made really good progress and went from a 1.3 cm difference between sides down to .2 difference. I thought we were happy with her head shape but now I'm looking at it more closely and I'm not so sure. Any other moms get their babes helmets off and feel the same? I don't know if I'm just being paranoid or what. Sometimes her head looks fine and other times it doesn't. I think we're going to go back in for a follow up scan but I was just wondering if my expectations were too high or what.

Re: Helmet moms

  • That's fantastic progress! Only 2mm difference is amazing. I've heard that helmet mamas always see the slight variation, but no one else will notice. Especially since your little one is a girl and likely won't have super, super short hair.

We still have 2-3 more months and I really hope I'm happy when we're finished.

  • We just got Savannah's off on NYE. So far I am happy with her head shape and ppl who haven't seen her head since Oct tell us how great it looks. Our helmet doc said her head will change until she's 2. Her physical therapist is going to keep an eye on her head since her torticollis is still very prominent. Our blessing is she is a belly sleeper and prefers to sit up to play now.
  • Can I just say how jealous I am that you're both done with your LO's helmets? Must be so nice to have that sweet head back :)

  • Ok that makes me feel better. I think I'm just obsessing but it's so obvious to me bc we have been staring at it for so long you know? I'm so happy to be out of it and number wise her progress is huge. We were lucky to have her hit a few big growth spurts which helped. Also our lo is a belly sleeper and pretty much never on her back anymore so hopefully her head keeps improving too. Thank u for your responses ladies!

  • @calinaz the next few months will fly by! Then you can snuggle your little head again. Hugs!
  • My daughter is 9 months and just got her helmet. We are looking at 3 months with it. I only keep her in it for about 16 hours a day. She has has several rashes from it already.

  • @Jenn06L80‌ hopefully it gets better. My daughter had a lot of issues with rashes too at the beginning bc she has such sensitive skin but it got better over time.

  • Are all of your babes crawling? Hazel goes in circles and scoots backwards but not forwards at all. I've been blaming the helmet but not sure that is why....

  • My daughter is not crawling or sitting. She has some motor delays for which she is in PT. Her motor delays are what really contributed to her needing a helmet. She has positional brachycephaly. Her twin is also motor delayed but moves a bit more. Her head is flat but not to the point she needed a helmet.

  • Yeah hazel had torticollis but was exited from pt about a month ago. I'm wondering if that is still contributing though since she is not pulling to stand, crawling or getting into or out of the sitting position. I was really hesitant to have them exit her for this reason. I feel like she may still need that pt

  • Evan had torticollis too, but seems to be mostly fixed. Our PT likes to continue until they are walking, since it can affect sitting, crawling, standing and walking. Evan started crawling early, surprisingly, but did favor his right side in the beginning of sitting and crawling (since that is his stabilizer side), so we had to work on getting him to put more weight on his left.

We aren't working on torticollis any more in PT, but are working on him pulling up to standing without extending his back, and in general not arching his back, which is his current biggest struggle. She's also been giving some suggestions for language, since I've been worried that Evan isn't babbling at all yet, even though that isn't really her area. She is fantastic!
