Brushing my teeth

Is anyone one else having a terrible time when it comes to brushing their teeth?? It seems every time I do it either brings on nausea, makes me wrech, or I end up vomiting... Any tricks or tips?? As this idea of limiting brushing my teeth to a minimum is grossing me out as I take really good care of my teeth!

Re: Brushing my teeth

  • I had this problem my first pregnancy. I tried switching toothpastes, brushing my teeth at different times and brushing more gently. I think in the end, nothing made a difference but shortly after the 16 week mark brushing my teeth was no longer an issue.
  • Thanks! I will give this a try!

This is what it looks like when I brush my teeth now:

LOL!! Love! For real, though, I suck at flossing.

And to the OP, I puke every morning when I brush my teeth but I don't hate it because then I feel better and have breakfast. To avoid puking again when I have to brush a 2nd time, I use my kids' sparkle Crest which is easier to handle than my minty whitening one that I use first. I'm going to try that pressure point, too. I also thought that spot was for headaches? Idk.

It is for headaches, toothaches, colds, constipation. It's contraindicated in pregnancy though, especially the first trimester.
ETA: I was taught to not press and hold a pressure point contraindicated in pregnancy while pregnant, unless at the end of pregnancy.
  • I had a horrible time brushing in the AM during my first weeks but now at 14 weeks I don't have this problem. It was the worse brusing my tongue so I just cut back on that until it wasn't a problem anymore. I just swished mouthwash a little longer! It will get better !
  • This is me every morning and night when I go to brush my teeth. Or even lately, when my husband brushes his teeth and then tries to kiss me. I've switched tooth pastes twice, and have tried using hardly ANY tooth paste at all. Nothing seems to help. My MIL says she was the same way until about 20 weeks with all three of her kids, so I guess at least there is hopefully a light at the end of the tunnel.

  • I had this problem throughout my entire pregnancy with DD1 (+ at least 2 months after a she was born). Has been the same this time around too - I'm not expecting it to end anytime soon :(
  • YES! I've been gagging everytime I brush. The combo of the taste and consistency of the paste is too much! I don't normally do mouth wash but I may try that to hit the spots I couldn't do with a toothbrush

  • Yes! And then when I do throw up I could cry thinking about the fact that I have to brush them again. It is my least favorite time of the day for sure
  • Yes, I feel you. I was gagging a lot during the first trimester when brushing but you gotta do it. I know it sucks but we are more vulnerable to cavities right now. I am going to schedule a dentist appointment next week...I am scared. It has been 2 years plus since I last went to the dentist...
  • For those that don't floss as often as they should.... My dentist suggested this trick and I haven't been yelled at since, get the floss plucker things and keep them in your car, when you get board if you sit in as much traffic as I do it will become an everyday occurance

  • I do okay brushing but flossing is tough. I just gag having to open my mouth long enough for it. And then gag if my gums bleed which they almost always do. I wasn't as nauseous during my other pregnancies so I can't remember when it got better but I know it did.
  • I have the same trouble. Sometimes I just brush the fronts of my teeth and avoid my tongue or opening my mouth to brush the tops of my teeth. Gross I know, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.

  • I have the same problem, for me it is the act if spitting out the toothpaste that makes me gag. I brush my teeth with rx toothpaste at night before bed and floss. The next time I can brush is at work immediately after lunch. It isn't ideal, especially since I have bad teeth to begin with and was slightly fanatical about brushing but it is better than puking B-)
  • I have this problem but it's usually only the night brushing so I try and add in a brush during the day or brush better when I'm not as gaggy. My brushing sessions are definitely quicker these days. With DD, the only times I threw up in first tri was when I was brushing my teeth. It sucked. And I don't remember when it got better but I'm almost positive that it did.

  • Ok im so glad im not the only one!! I don't have/didnt have any nausea so far but I immediately gag brushing my teeth too! I try to think of something else instead while I do it. I also tend to gag when I cough sometimes too. Thanks @kristhegirl‌, I will try that!
  • Oh yes. Just the knowledge that I have to brush my teeth leads to pukey feelings. It sucks! I used to love brushing my teeth.
  • yes! I can brush my teeth event-free about 30% of the time! It's so awful! At least the toilet is right there!
