Baby Names

Names "meant to be"

This is just my personal experience, but do you feel like your kids' names just "fit"?

With DS (age 2) my favorites were Ronan & Desmond. We named him Ronan, he is definitely not a Desmond.

With DD (age 6 weeks) it was between Coraline & Fiona. She's Coraline, I don't think Fiona would fit her at all. (Though another on our list, Penelope, I could see her wearing well.)

The "runner up" names are still on my short-list for possible future kids.

  • My son Quinn would have been a Bryce, which I do see him fitting as well.

Vivienne would have been Audra or Nora, I don't see her being a Nora at all, but she came very close to being Audra.  I can actually see her being an Alice (which is my MIL's name).  Probably because she looks exactly like her!

  • With DD1 I can't remember being between names. I remember DH wanted names like Abigail and Elizabeth, but I was very set. At the end, I got a little worried, but she definitely fit her name from birth.

With DD2, I really wanted Eliza, but our last 2 names standing were Isla and Edith nn Edie. DH won with Isla. As the pregnancy went on I attempted to go back and push for Edie, but I didn't because it just felt right even then. She doesn't look like an Edie at all now.

  • My daughter totally fits her name! We choose the name Aria Charlotte at out anatomy scan and kept it up until she was born and then she just didn't look like an Aria. I was starting not to love the name because I saw it getting more popular but my DH was in love so I was going to use it. After he saw her he told me she didn't look like an Aria either. I was so happy! I told him my back up name and he loved it! I look at her now and think it fits her but I also think she could have been a Vivienne or Matilda, my two top choices. We plan to go into the next pregnancy without choosing names and just waiting until we meet him/her. It won't stop me from dreaming :)

I'll be the voice of dissent. I think kids grow into their names. Personally, I don't think brand-new newborns have a lot of personality, nor do I think most of them look at all similar to how they will look a year or two later, so I've never understood people who go to the hospital with multiple names and decide which one "fits."
I can agree to an extent here, I do think a lot of kids naturally grow into their names. I would add, that at least for me personally, there are some names that I associate with certain physical traits. For example, H and I went in to the hospital with Caroline and Juliette as our top choices. DD came out with very dark hair and a nice tan complexion and to us she didn't look like a Caroline at all because we thought of Caroline as a name for a light haired child with a fair complexion. Some people just have an idea of what a name looks like if that makes sense.

The only Caroline I know has dark hair and a tan complexion.
I find it quite interesting that people do seem to have their associations with certain looks to names. Friends of ours recently had a baby and told us after that they had two boy named picked, one for if baby had light hair and one for if he had dark hair. They had a girl but I'm not sure if they had the same set up with their girl names.
Each to their own I think but personally, I would know what a newborn baby 'looked like' in regards to whether a name suited them.
  • DD1 is definitely NOT a Zahava. DD2 is only 2 weeks old so it's less certain.
  • For me it isn't so much looks or personality,I suppose I misspoke. It is more a feeling. I felt in my gut that this name would be perfect for her in the future and that I would tire of it as I have other names in the past. I felt like I wouldn't have name regret. If I went with Aria then I think I would have felt wrong.
  • Dd1 had a name going in to the delivery suite. It just wasn't right though. Maybe we both had deep down worries or just weren't sure. Either way, 8 hours later she had a name and we love it.
Dd2 had a name and I couldn't imagine Her as anything else. She very quickly grew into it.

  • I feel like my kids really fit their names.

For DD, I really liked Maren Elizabeth to honor both of our grandmothers...but DS has an "M" name and I didn't want them to have "matchy" names. As much as I adore the name, I can't picture DD as a Maren.

  • I think they grow into them. We were talking names when my BFF had a daughter and I remember asking my FI if he thought the name Sylvia was too big for a newborn. We both said that we thought my BFF's daughter could be a Sylvia. She is two months old now and I couldn't imagine calling her anything but Harper which is what her name is.

  • DS is definitely a Reed. In the beginning my top choice had been Noah and DH's was Arthur. We vetoed each other's immediately. Reed is my father's name and he was named after the man who saved my grandfather's life in WWII. DH wasn't "in love" with it but agreed. Now he says he couldn't imagine Reed being a Noah or an Arthur and I can't either. Our girls name was Johanna after my grandma but I don't think we'll use it for this baby. It's early on but things just feel different this time around

I can't imagine calling DD Colette or Isla at this point… I think there are lots of other names that would fit her but I love her name and I think it works on her.

ETA, it's maybe a little weird but I picture Colettes with brown hair and since DD has blonde I really can't imagine it on her.
  • DD could easily have been another name
  • Question for parents of multiples, especially same gender multiples: Do you ever think that you should have switched your kids names? Like, twin A really should be Suzie and twin B really should be Sally, when originally it was the other way around?
  • Can't remember our other options for DS, but I do remember desperately wanting Lucas instead of just plain Luke. Now that he's here I don't like Lucas for him one bit and Luke fits so well.
