Sanity Check - daycare

So, one of my husband's work benefits is 20 free hours of childcare for this move.  However, the daycare facility on base does not do hourly care for kiddos under 1.  To use this benefit, we'd have to go to a home daycare provider, off base.  I know absolutely nothing about this woman, her facilities, her other kids, etc.

I called her last week to schedule him for this coming week.  She said it would probably work but she'd give me a call back after she got the kids down for a nap.  I never got a call back.  That, plus just the way she was talking (she seemed very reluctant), rubbed me the wrong way.

I don't want to do it.  I viscerally do not want to send him to this random home for a day.  I would rather wear him all day while the movers pack us up.  Am I crazy?

  • I wouldn't send my kid to a daycare for a move, I don't think you're crazy. Especially not a new unknown one. I would maybe ask a friend for help if I really felt I needed it.

If your gut tells you it's a bad idea, don't do it. We had a very bad experience with our old daycare provider- a licensed home. We loved her up until the day when she wasn't watching all her kiddos and one of them got into her pool and almost died.
Now I'm not an alarmist at all. And that's obviously a very dramatic, extreme example of what can go wrong. We had no reasons not to trust that woman- our dd was always well cared for and loved. So if you're already starting out feeling reservations, don't do it!

  • If you're not comfortable, don't do it. My sister just did a move with her 4yo and 1yo home with her. The 4yo "supervised" the movers (literally sat in a chair in the front yard watching them pack the truck) and the 1yo just followed my sister around and played with the boxes. If your DS would be fine being worn, you'd probably be fine keeping him home.
  • Trust your gut!
  • I wouldn't do it.

Unless they would allow me to use the credit to choose my own care provider and watch baby at my own home I wouldn't bother.
  • I would not send my kids to a random stranger for 20 hours for a move.  No way.

  • Don't do it. Baby wear!
  • Thanks guys!  I talked to DH and he agreed.  We can't use the benefit anywhere else, oh well.  All of our friends have already moved, but if we really have trouble there is one person I know I can call.
