Question for food intolerance/allergy moms

So we know R is MPI and I've been dairy free since he was 7 weeks old. He's been totally fine since about 4 weeks after that. We started solids, BLW style just after about 3-4 weeks ago. He's had oatmeal, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, and apples. About 2 weeks ago he started having (gross) green mucous poops 5-6 times a day. He was teething and congested, but his cold has passed and both teeth broke through over a week ago. I also stopped all solids a week ago. He's still having bad poops.

He has also developed what looks like eczema (raised, red, scaly skin patches) on his arms, legs, and back which he's never had before.

I've sent a message to our pedi, but wondering what you ladies think. I haven't changed my diet. Could another intolerance show up so late (almost 7 months)? Just teething?? Would you cut soy or other things at this point? I'm so confused. Thanks.

Re: Question for food intolerance/allergy moms

  • I think allegeries can show up anytime, I'm not sure about intolerances. I vote allergy to either something you gave him solid wise or a new allergy to something in your diet, either of which isn't fully put of his system yet.

  • Seems like an obvious thing, but how did you make the oatmeal?
    With breastmilk.

  • When ds2 seemed to be reacting to something after we started solids, I took him back off all solids and reintroduced them slowly until I was able to determine what caused the reaction I noted..

  • And just regular oats?
It was baby oatmeal (Earth's Best and BeechNut). According to the label it should have been fine. But now I'm wondering if there was some contamination. He ate more of that than any other solids. He got just a few bites of the other things.

  • It was probably the baby oatmeal honestly. Those packaged cereals have a bunch of added ingredients. You can make your own refined oats by just blending up oats.
It would make sense. I guess I'll wait another 2 weeks and see if his symptoms resolve. He ate it for 2 weeks. So frustrating. the pedi even recommended the BeechNut one specifically because of the MPI.

This is going to sound dumb, but would I just make regular oatmeal with water and toss it in the blender for food processor, then add some BM to thin it a little before serving? Since he spoon feeds himself it has to be thin - he just sucks it off the spoon.

    Maybe I"ll just EBF forever.

Grind it up while dry. Then make it...it'll cook faster than when whole. Then add BM.

I just wanted to chime in and say that the food avoidance thing really does get easier. :(

Thanks. I'm sure it does. I know so many of you have it so much worse. I just feel bad that I thought I was doing a good thing for him. His reaction this time is even worse that when I was eating dairy. Ugh.

On a positive note, I went out to lunch at Not Your Average Joe's today. I made it clear I needed a dairy-free meal and the manager even came over to confirm. Then they brought me a burger on a bun slathered with butter. They fixed it, then 2 managers and our server apologized, they gave us the entire meal for free (not just mine, but the whole table) and gave me a gift card to use the next time! I was impressed at their handling of the situation.

  • I would blame the baby oatmeal. Just use real oats like CLL suggested.

  • Piggie backing... Is my kid missing out by not starting with cereal? I haven't read up on it this time, but what I vaguely recall from when N was little, there's no real value in it. Is there? I figured we'd wait until 6 months or so and do semi-BLW.

  • We didn't do any cereal and any oatmeal I made from using quick oats, so it wasn't fortified. LO has done BLW and his iron levels were great at his 12 month checkup.

  • The pedi hasn't said anything about iron yet. Is that something that comes up at the 6 month appointment?

  • Or maybe they drew blood last time and checked. Now I can't remember.

  • We didn't start it as a mandatory thing, just as another taste/texture etc for him to try. The pedi said do oatmeal since rice has very little nutritional value etc. he seemed to like it so I kept giving it to him.

Cereal is such a modern human invention. It just seems weird as a mandatory first food to me. For iron I made M pate and just give her a preloaded spoon at each meal. It's her current favorite.
H cried when I gave him liver. Sad.
I did this for S, I mixed it with stuff tho I think
Yeah, my pate is just chicken liver sautéed up with onion, garlic, white wine and veggies we had on hand (probably carrots, fennel, celeriac), then puréed with coconut oil. I brought it up to Canada with me and we all had it with cocktails. @Brandiewine11‌ I meant my comment towards Jane's question. I don't think there's anything wrong with giving babies cereal, I just think it's weird that our society has turned it into THE FIRST SOLID THING THAT BABIES EAT!!!

    @Mapleme Here's a possible explanation for you. https://bkmarcus.com/2007/08/29/pablum/
