Travelling by plane when pregnant

Is it safe to travel by plane when pregnant? If you have an uncomplicated pregnancy what about turbulence? Can it cause a miscarriage if you are over 16 weeks?

Re: Travelling by plane when pregnant

  • Ay yai yai.  Yes, you can fly.  No, it won't cause a miscarriage.  Turbulence is no worse than hitting bumps while riding in your car, which I'm sure you do anyway.

  • It is safe to travel by plane unless your doctor has informed you otherwise. Individual airlines do have restriction as to how far into the third trimester you can fly, so check with the specific airlines. But I think it's generally like 36 weeks and beyond. And some airlines may request a doctors note, so it's better to have one just in case.

No it will not cause a miscarriage.

  • I flew last pregnancy when I was right around 16 weeks... It went fine, the only thing the doctor warned about was to not sit still for too long because of getting clots in your legs

As long as your pregnancy is uncomplicated, it is fine. Just get up and walk around every hour, especially if it's a long flight, to help aid circulation and avoid blood clots.  And pack lots of snacks and drink lots of water on board.  If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor.

  • My doc said it was fine to fly but not to go through the body scanners, but the metal detector are safe. I had to get the pat down my airport only has body scanners.

sh!t, I had to go through the body scanner on Sunday because something kept beeping on me through the metal detector. It crossed my mind to ask, but I didn't. Did your doctor say why? Something else for me to worry about :(

  • I'm headed to Belize next month. I'll be 19 weeks and my doc was all for it. The only thing she mentioned was when it was closer she will look to see if there's any travel concerns because we're going out of the country.

  • I flew in every trimester of my last pregnancy and probably went through both types of scanner. My kid is fine. ;)

You're fine! My doctor said it was safe to go thru the body scanner and I still did additional research that said the same. No worries!

  • My doc just said there isn't enough research on the body scanners, that technically there safe but she didn't recommend it.

Because I know some will question what she told me, her background is she use to teach at Harvard and now is with John's Hopkins.

I'm sure its fine to go through but I just played it safe.
  • As others said, it's totally fine. I'm flying in a week, with a lap child as well, so that should be fun. I went through the scanner at 7w with DS, and he's totally fine. I mean, he's got a 3rd testicle now but I think it gives him character. ;)

  • I will be flying long haul (23 hours) when pregnant if medically cleared. I know lots of people who have done the same living in Australia and having family in the UK. I've been told it's safest to fly between 20 and before 32 weeks if health is ok. Travel in later stages of pregnancy can trigger preterm labour.
  • I always skip the scanners. They're overwhelmingly likely to be totally safe but that's when they're functioning properly, and I know for a fact that they are not checked to see if radiation outputs are within expected ranges. I wouldn't trust the tsa to calibrate a cooking scale :)

  • Just flew from Texas to Germany. You'll be fine. But if it's a long flight like mine was, do yourself a favor and pack everything you need to make that flight comfortable. I was in hell for 10 hours.
