    2.  Testing 4xdaily, glyburide with dinner to help with fasting numbers.

    3.  My numbers are completely all over the place.  I've been careful about meals, and things that were safe a few weeks ago (even last week) are now causing either low blood sugar or high.  I called my OB last week, but she was out for the holiday.  The doc on call said to just wait and talk to my OB on Friday when I see her.  I'm pretty sure I have more mess in my future.  I'm actually looking forward to it, I hate things being in limbo.  I just want my little girl to stay healthy.

    4.  We did a lot of traveling in 2014, including the trip that gave us our cute little "souvenir".

    Treatment/Regimen? Diet, test 4x a day

    Any changes, updates, burning questions?
I had a quick appointment just yesterday. The dietitian was very pleased with my numbers, I had nothing out of range in the last 2.5 weeks. My next appointment is 3 weeks from now at 36 weeks, which will be my final one. I've been getting a swim in for at least 30mins every morning (except yesterday when I was ill) and a 30mins walk after lunch. The dietitian told me with the amount of activities I'm doing, I get to eat whatever I want for breakfast. I celebrated by eating a whole banana. It was tasty.

QOTW: What was the best thing about 2014? Beside the excitement of having a baby, it's my relationship with DH. A lot of bad things happened to me over the course of the year, all those events made me realize how good my life really is. I feel we grew much closer over the year and I'm so in love still after 8 years together.

    Treatment/Regimen? diet, testing 4x/day
Any changes, updates, burning questions? I did pretty well with the diet over Christmas (even my specialist said so), but then I got a rather high number for lunch today even though I didn't do anything out of the ordinary. Being proud of myself was short-lived lol.
QOTW: What was the best thing about 2014? I know it's cliche, but definitely getting the BFP! We'd been trying for some time and had just started wondering if we needed to get tested, so this little Yoshi made our whole year!

    32 and 2 days

    Treatment/Regimen?

Still testing 4xs a day and small dose of glyburide at night. At my next meeting I'm going to see if I can drop testing down, it's starting to get exhausting doing 4 times and trying to remember, I've been having good numbers so it's worth a shot!

    Any changes, updates, burning questions?

Pretty much same ol. Tired, as I'm sure everyone is lol. I've been having issues with SPD for about a month now and it's starting to become more prominent. Ugh. Just keep telling myself not too much longer.

QOTW: What was the best thing about 2014?

It's a toss up between getting married to the love of my life and finding out we were preggo again! I had a miscarriage in feb and this one was a bit of a surprise but was so happy to find out :) I pretty much feel like I've been prego all stinking year but its a good feeling :)

    How many weeks? 32

Treatment/Regimen? Testing 4x a day, watching carbs and sugar intake, trying to stay active after meals

Any changes, updates, burning questions? I called in my numbers for the first time and the nutritionist said they looked good. She liked that I seem to understand exactly what was wrong with my higher numbers. I'm starting to get a good grasp on what I can/can't eat and it was reassuring to hear her say things looked good. As long as I can keep myself on track, I think I can tackle this! I just wish I hadn't pulled a muscle in my calf so I could keep up more on the exercise part!

QOTW: What was the best thing about 2014? Well, besides the obvious cliche answer of getting pregnant, I'd have to say our trip to Disney World in Jan. It was H's first time there and we had an absolute blast! We really want to try going to Disneyland next year (ETA: by next year I mean 2016.. my parents go on a trip every Jan and are planning CA this time but I can't go!) but I'm trying to decide if it will be a good idea with an almost one year old. I went for the first time around that age so I know my mom probably has lots of tips and will probably help out since she doesn't go on a majority of the rides!

    2. Diet and testing 6x (though today that went down to 4x). Insulin is now a real possibility
    3. The Christmas holiday meant that rather than two weeks of monitoring before getting further input from the doctor, we went three weeks. Today we were told first by the resident (intern?) that my numbers looked pretty good, aside from a slightly elevated morning number. She suggested playing around with my bedtime snack. We also talked about how I tend to graze more than the 6x-testing schedule has allowed, so she reduced testing to 4x and suggested I snack more frequently. Then she said that her attending suggesting starting right away on insulin because eating more would likely cause my numbers to go up. And, the nurse who would show me how to use it would be out next week, so it was better to start this week. I asked if we could do a little more experimenting first; they reluctantly agreed and had the nurse teach me how to administer the insulin injection. Anyway, long story short, we'll try out a few things over the next few days, but it looks like insulin is on the horizon. I'm trying to figure out why this upsets me so much and why I am so resistant (because I know this is not that big a deal in the scheme of things, that it's not my fault, that prevention/keeping levels in check is important for me and the baby), so that I can move on with less angst and just do what needs to be done. Such a mental game.

@Ellteejay, I know what you mean about feeling bummed by those bad numbers, especially when the seemingly same conditions the day before produced different numbers. A few days ago I asked my husband to read my morning ones and I'd get them from him later because I hated starting my day off with that feeling.

    4. The best thing about 2014 was renovating the kitchen with my husband. It was challenging and trying at times, but we did just about everything ourselves and learned a lot about construction and how we work together in the process. Oh, and getting pregnant :) Looking forward to 2015!

After having GD three times now, I don't know if I just "have it down" or if I have "GD-light" but my numbers have been great, I'm not hungry and my will power is strong! I know how hard it can be, but it seems much easier on me this time around. It was so frustrating with my last pregnancies, so I totally sympathize with you gals who are struggling.

Treatment/Regimen? Same crap as before. Testing 4 times daily and dieting and exercise.
Any changes, updates, burning questions? No changes. Kelsey Seybold is still the biggest bunch of idiots I swear I have ever met. No one has ever returned my calls for help on my levels. Doctor still doesn't answer my questions on what my sugar needs to be and continues to blame me for anything new wrong when I go in. I had missed a few testing times and the doctor lectured me about it. I was honest and told her since I'm not working after I do my fasting number I usually eat and then go back to bed and forget to test (DD was in school when I'd go back to bed).
She then lectured me on how I can't sleep all day and judged me and said besides don't you  have a child you have to take care of. To which I responded yes I do and shes in school when I go back to bed I don't sleep all day when shes home but I do take naps.
I will never use this doctor for anything ever once Lo is born.

    2. Testing 4x day and taking gylburide at bedti,e

    3. Had my first appointment with my endocrinologist since I got the GD diagnosis. She was actually really happy with my numbers. I have had a few days of waking up with low numbers the past few mornings, but she doesn't think it's time to start thinking about coming off the glyburide, but maybe trying to see if I can get an even small dose.
Br> the twice weekly appointments is also getting annoying already. But had my 34 week appointment with the OB yesterday also. She too, was happy with my numbers, and unlike the MFM dr, she said that she wasn't too stressed over me needing the twice weekly appointments yet, but that they won't hurt. So I guess it's not a huge deal that I didn't have 2 appointments last week with all the holiday stuff going on.

Best thing about 2014 is a tie between actually feeling like we are making progress on our home and the renovations needed for it, and me making the decsion to go back and get my degree and now only being 4 classes from getting it. We have gotten all new windows in the house and have replaced the 2 most used doors as well as our garage doors. We have gotten the ceiling in the baby's room fixed and it's almost ready for him, and we have made huge steps towards getting the basement refinished. Spring classes are supposed to start a week before my due date, so I hope those go well, but I figured it would be easier to knock out 2 classes while at home on maternity leave, that's it would be to try and do them when I go back to work in addition to having baby at home. Then just one class for each summer term and I'm done!

This is true! The course of GD follows a bell curve, with your insulin resistance getting worse and worse until it peaks (37-38 weeks, if I recall), then starts dropping a bit. So, things that may have worked before, may not as time goes on. SO frustrating!

@Neesey  The first OB that I saw after I had to switch from the MWs, was similar to that. She doesn't sound as bad, but kept throwing the word stillbirth out there and whatnot.

I did some research and also ended up talking to her some as well. The way she explained it is that it's not so much that the GD is causing the issues, but the GD indicates that there are issues with the placenta. As the placenta gets older it doesn't work as well - becomes more insulin resistant and such - this also means that there can be other issues.  At least this is what all she used to convince me that I should be getting the twice weekly appointments. The OB I saw yesterday didn't think I need this much so soon, but said it doesn't hurt to be overly cautious.

Also, apparently a lot of GD women are being treated like they have regular diabetes and the stats and such given tend to be those of pregnant women with regular diabetes or uncontrolled GD.

  • @HailsMom‌ you'll actually find almost nothing about moms who have controlled gd, I have found a few things about how these moms should be treated as any other normal non diabetic mom. But I come across very very little out there.

Twice weekly scans? I don't know how far you are, I'm 32 weeks and I'm doing every other week. The still birth is just a scare tactic, there has been no proven study showing still birth or "aged placenta" is higher in a gd mom who is controlled than a non gd mom. I do know that type 1 and some type 2 can be different though.

You sound like you are informed though :)
  • I don't think I would have reacted so strongly if she had mentioned any reasons why. But making me pinky swear, without explanation doesn't help my anxiety level! I have an appointment with a new doctor soon.

I actually noticed this tonight. I ate some frozen pizza tonight and didn't go over on my carbs, but normally eating something like that would make my numbers higher. I did do a few random exercises after eating (sometimes I do some squats or move my arms around, haha) but last time I had a similar meal my number was in the 130s, close to the limit. This time I had chugged my whole water bottle before testing, and my number was 117. I will have to keep this in mind and see if it really does make a difference!

  • Hey, how often are you guys doing ultrasounds? Growth scans and the biophysical profiles? Just curious :)
  • My doctor hasn't even mentioned doing ultrasounds. Which is something I would have to pre-schedule since they won't do it in office.

I'm going on 32 weeks and shes not mentioned that I need to go ahead and schedule for scans or anything.

She also never says anything about my growth or weight. The only time ever being was when I said something about loosing too much weight and then she was just rude to me.

  • @psychobutthead‌ my OB doesn't do NST for GD, it may not be a thing with Kelsey. The only reason we are doing a growth scan this time, is because I had one last pregnancy and asked if we could again. Otherwise, she wasn't too concerned.
I make a point to ask at every appointment if she is measuring on track and to go over all of my own concerns regarding my numbers. It is important to be proactive in your appointments, our doctors aren't mind readers.
Have you thought about seeing another OB in the group? Surely she isn't the only one in that office.

  • @psychobutthead‌ you are diet controlled if what you've said is correct. ACOG says that it is acceptable for diet controlled moms with no other issues to be managed conservatively (no extra tests). This is good news for your baby because you don't want them to deliver you early for no real reason :)

Others who are on oral meds or insulin, you are classified differently. And get more surveillance and risk a delivery at 37-38 weeks depending on so many factors.

Everyone don't let diabeetus turn into cryabeetus and mind your own pregnant business. Each of your cases is different and there is a lot of latitude for appropriate management.

  • With both of my boys, I didn't start getting NSTs until I started on insulin (even though it was a VERY small amount). I'm told I won't need them this time unless I start insulin. I did get a growth U/S late in the game (38 weeks?), but my doctor has a machine in his office, so it wasn't a big deal. He may do it for all his patients, but I've always had GD, so I'm not sure!

With GD, there is a concern that the placenta can deteriorate, so my doctor won't let me go much past my due date. However, DS#1 was induced (after I showed signs of starting labor on my own) on his due date and DS#2 came on his own the day before his due date. So, even on insulin for (well-controlled) GD, my doctor let me go until my due date.

  • The hospital where I am is known to be fairly conservative in its management of GDM (that said, it seems to depend which attending is working...). They had me do a growth scan right away after diagnosis, and will have one every 4 weeks until near the very end (at which point they haven't indicated what monitoring will look like). There has only been one fundal height measurement during my entire pregnancy, so it doesn't seem that they rely on that data very heavily. Thus far I haven't had any non-stress tests, but that may change if I go on insulin.
  • Pardon my mental break... I've been on my diet about 3 weeks now (I know, not as long as many of you), but I've hit the "I'm HUNGRY and just want to eat more food phase." It's been great so far, but the last few days, I'm HUNGRY. And I don't want string cheese or nuts or more meat. I want a REALLY good, warm, buttered sourdough roll. And milk with chocolate chip cookies.
