Heart palpatations ....

36 weeks and wondering if anyone else has experienced heart flutters or palpatations? I've noticed lately it happens to me at least once a day..... Obviously my resting pulse is higher then normal due to being pregnant but was wondering if this is happening to anyone else?

Re: Heart palpatations ....

  • I get them a lot. I have a sporadic form of atrial fibrillation though that normally acts up only once a year but since being pregnant and the double amount of blood volume it happens more frequently. My cardiologist said that it just means more blood to baby. Not sure if that helps. But I'm pretty sure than palpitations during pregnancy are normal.

Yes, mine started at about 22 weeks. I was having shortness of breath with it. My resting heart rate was 120. Dr had ekg and echo done both normal. Then I stayed in hospital for one night at 35 weeks for fever, increased heart rate, and dizziness (also a few abnormal labs). But everything checked out again. Dr equated it all to just how my body is handling the pregnancy. (Only TWO more nights to be pregnant for me tho!) <:-P

    Good luck!

  • I get those even when I'm not pregnant. But I find that when I'm more diligent at going to the gym and exercising they go away for a while. I'll get them a few times a week though
  • OMG, I though it was just me and it freaked me out.  I've never had an arrhythmia before and I was sitting on the couch last week and felt strong palpitations.  It's only been once but good to know I'm not the only one.

  • Yes, it happens to me usually when I'm reclining in the bathtub or in bed reading.

  • 4littlebears - that sounds a lot like me. When I work out and am active it does not happen. I have not been very good about working out this pregnancy. Have you ever asked your Dr about it? Just curious what they may say? I think I'm giving myself anxiety over it and that is making it worse. The past week I have had them quite frequently...... Especially when I first lay down at night.
  • I have had tachycardia since the second tri and I get dizzy and short of breath with those episodes. I did a holter monitor and everything was fine. I had an echo a few years ago, which is why I didn't have one again. OB just told me that if it gets bothersome, she would put me on beta blockers. It is normal, but you should still mention it to your OB. For me - there is a plan in case it acts up during labor.

My mom is a doctor. I've mentioned it to her and she's not too worried. The one time a couple years ago I said something to my primary care doc, they listened, didn't hear anything and said oh well. I think if it would get a lot worse I'd pursue it further.
  • Occasionally I do, but less than when I wasn't pregnant. Mine is tied with anxiety, though.

  • Similarly to what is mentioned above, I noticed this the first time last night in the bathtub. I'm just about 38 weeks so this aligns with what the other ladies here are saying (but always a good idea to ask your doctor). I have no history of any cardiovascular issues so attributed it to the pregnancy and maybe the bath was too hot affecting my blood pressure?
  • I'll get them if I drink too much caffeine - pregnant or not. And when I stress out about it, they most definitely get worse.
  • Almost 39 weeks and I have also had them occasionally. Sounds like you're in good company.
