Saying goodbye to your fur baby

It's time to say goodbye to our dear Leo. He's been with me since 2002 and I'm going to miss him dearly. I knew this day would come but it's still not easy. I'm trying to think of what I can do to make his last day with us special and how to commemorate his time here on earth. I'm hoping those of you who may have experienced this may have some suggestions for me and my family.

Re: Saying goodbye to your fur baby

  • No experience but just wanted to say I'm sorry you have to go thru that! Sending hugs your way!

  • Ughh heartbreaking. Extra snuggles, favorite toys activities and whatever food his little heart desires. Maybe a nice family photo together one last time. Also there are some great ways to keep his ashes if your going the cremation route.
  • Maybe find a way to preserve his paw print
  • Hugs to you, such a difficult time. I read a story about a family taking their dog to the park, feeding him cheeseburgers and such on his final day.
  • Sending hugs your way. So hard. Maybe play ball or their favorite thing

  • So so sorry. We put our Indy down last May after 12 awesome years together. We spent his last night cuddling and hugging. Our clinic made a plaster print of his paw and painted it and it is on display with his picture and collar on our piano. It is special to me. We also have family property where we could bury him so I have "visited".

  • I'm so sorry :(

Saying goodbye is never an easy thing to do. Its something we do out of love for our pets despite our desire to hold on.

Remember all the wonderful times you've had and cherish those memories.

If Leo is able to do something he loves go do that. A favorite walking place, a game of ball, playing with a new toy, or a special treat. But don't stress about that or feel like you have to make this last day perfect. Just give him pets and love and enjoy each others company. That's enough.

Ask your vet if they will make you a paw print as a nice keepsake. We do it automatically for private cremations, but if you ask they'd probably do it even if you'd like a general cremation. Alternatively you can get some crayola air dry clay and do it home.

Again, I'm so sorry you're going through this and please take comfort that you are letting Leo go with dignity and without suffering.

  • I'm so sorry. My dog has been with us since 2001 and we found out about a month ago she has a extreme case of diabetes. We have been giving her insulin and she's doing okay but still sick. Dh and I have started talking about putting her down sometime in the spring if it keeps getting worse and we feel that is best for her. It's just so hard to make that decision.
