Pregnancy book for 5th-7th grade reading level?

I know we've discussed pregnancy books a fair amount and I apologize for adding another thread.

Just found out a younger neighbor is pregnant, sweet girl but, the product of shity south Florida education system. I've flipped through many pregnancy books and can't seem to find one that would suit her needs. I'm looking for something a middle school student could understand.

Any help is appreciated, thank you ladies.

Re: Pregnancy book for 5th-7th grade reading level?

  • What to Expect when You're Expecting is pretty easy to read.  At least, I thought so.  It defines most of its terms and explains things pretty thoroughly.

You might have trouble finding a pregnancy book actually aimed at folks that young because, ideally, folks that young wouldn't get pregnant and folks who do get pregnant would read at a higher level.  I know that's not always the case (obviously), and I'm not judging, but still.  Your neighbor may have to just use a good, old-fashioned dictionary to look up any terms she doesn't understand.  Well, that or ask her doctor.

If she doesn't have a lot of money to spend, the library should have lots of books she can check out and the local health department may have classes she can sign up for.  Good luck to her and good for you for looking out for her.

  • Thank you ladies.
  • I work for a community action agency and I know our home visitors have pregnancy and parenting books that are aimed at that reading level... I'm not sure of the name:(
Have her look into the community action agencies in your area. Our state offers free home visitation to help with prenatal health and child development. We actually have a program devoted to teen moms.
Also, don't be so quick to judge the education system. I think shitty parents are more to blame than the schools.
  • I've never read or looked at this book, but I've heard that "The Mother of All Pregnancy Books" by Ann Douglas was an easier to understand book. I hope you find something!
