MMR

A little scared to post this.
Not only because it's one of my first post but I'm scared of answers, if any.

So... I had my first appointment with midwife on Tuesday, she has put me at low risk and everything was going fine, until I mentioned that I had vaccinations and concieved. I'd had Typhoid and hep a and b which she said would be fine but when I mentioned MMR her face dropped, and said she's concerned and I have to see a consultant. Midwife also told me to not worry to much because I may have concieved later and vaccine may have been out of my system.Sorry for long post but was just wondering if anyone had any information to calm my nerves or been through this themselves? I have read that there is no proof that the injection will cause birth defects, but I can't help but worry as we had a loss in May.Thanks in advance for any information.

  • According to the CDC, (Doctor Google, so take it for what it's worth), the risk is theoretical.

What that tells me is that if there are any risks, they haven't been presented in such numbers that doctors can say with any certainty. But on paper, theoretically, it could be harmful. Because the risk is theoretical but not proven (risk or no risk), they just play it safe.

Keep in mind that any time there is a hypothesis like this, particularly in the field of medicine, they err on the side of caution and use very specific wording to ensure that other doctors can communicate effectively.

It appears unlikely that the MMR will negatively impact your pregnancy, but in the spirit of being cautious, I've got my fingers crossed for you. Good luck!

  • With my first I tested negative for rubella vaccine, my body didn't convert it as a kid. I had to wait to get it until after baby was born. I wouldn't be to concerned the chances it impacts would be minimal. They just operate in land of liability.
  • Thank you ladies! I'm trying to keep positive and this helps!
  • I don't have any relevant experience, but wanted to offer a random "internet stranger" hug.  I'm sorry your uneasy with the uncertainty.  Thoughts and prayers that everything is ok and it's just an "err on the side of caution" kind of recommendation.

  • Sending thoughts and prayers! So sorry you are in this situation.
  • Thanks for replies, more support than what I've got from some close friends. Means alot ladies
  • Thanks for the luck! I haven't read anything bad tbh. I also read that within 5 days my body may have started making its own antibodies against the vaccine, so by that time we wouldn't of concieved. Better to be safe than sorry so see what is said or see what they find. I'll be 13 weeks come my scan, if I concieved on time that is

I wonder if this is what happened to me. I just tested negative for the rubella vaccine even though I know I've had my vaccine and boosters. I'll have to get the vaccine again after delivery.

  • @mkrupar‌ I had to have it twice my sister had it 3 x and never converted. My theory is that if our bodies fought the vaccine it'd kick the diseases ass. Lol.

You body might not convert it either. Then you'd really have nothing to worry about.
  • Thanks fingers crossed
  • Fingers crossed for you also! CDC recommends not getting pregnant until 4 weeks after getting the vaccine. I would defer to your doctors (not the internet, which can be so scary, or other people who aren't really experts).
