Blankets

When is it safe to start covering your baby with a blanket in bed? Or do you already use a blanket?
I keep seeing friends on FB covering their babies, and I'm not 100% sure what the standard is on it but it makes me nervous to see! I can't figure out if I'm just paranoid or what.

  • He has to have an Aden & anais blanket when he goes to sleep. It's been about 3 months now. He won't go to bed without it. I have 4 I rotate literally daily so he doesn't get attached to one like his sister with her ratty blanket. It's light and breathable but I am constantly moving it away from his face. He wears fleece pjs to bed and is always warm so I don't worry about covering but if he was cold I wouldn't hesitate
  • I give DD an a&a lovie and put her in a sleepsack. Larger blankets a scare me!

Mine have been using blankets for about 2 months. I use crocheted ones so if they do cover their faces there are "breathing holes" LOL.  But honestly they rarely keep themselves covered for long so we do footie jammies with a onesie underneath and warm clothes + socks during the day.

The crochet blanket is a really good idea!
  • DD has a sleep sack. But my older son is 4 and still can't use a blanket properly, or always ends up bunched at the end of the bed.
  • I do blankets for naps when we're away from home, like if we're spending the day at the ILs, because I've always got one in the diaper bag. At home for naps and overnight we do the sleep sack and nothing else in the crib.
  • We use sleep sacks, fleece for warmer nights and a 2.5 tog Grobag for colder nights (we're in MI). She also sleeps with an A&A blanket as a lovely. I, like a pp suggested, rotate 4 of them. It worked with DD1 and DS.

  • We're in CO and it's chilly in the kids' room, so he sleeps in a fleece footed sleeper and fleece sleep sack. I also wrap a blanket around him from the waist down. He usually wiggles out of it, but it makes me feel better.

  • Fleece footed pjs, sleep sack and crocheted blanket draped from the waist down. We've been doing it for a few months (Shea has only started moving in his crib in the past couple weeks, and only when he wakes up to eat).
He likes the weight of the crocheted blanket on his legs. Strangely enough he has zero interest in lovies.
  • We do fleece pjs with the sleep sack too.
  • Just fleece pj's with socks underneath

For some reason when I read this, I was thinking you did footie pajamas with an extra pair of socks.

I thought that's what she meant until I read your comment :-S

LO sleeps in fleece footie pjs, sometimes a sleep sack and rarely with a blanket draped over her lower half.
  • Liam has an a&a blanket and a crocheted blanket at day care and has used one when napping at other peoples houses (if it's cold) but we haven't used one at home in his crib yet.

  • Crocheted blanket from 7.5 months. He was waking up cold even wearing footed pjs. He rolls out from under it when he stirrs but if I check on him I just cover him again.

  • We used our A+A blankets and rotated the crocheted ones I made for DS for months, until last week. He moves around so much in his crib now that he's truly crawling on his hands and knees and pulling up to stand, he spun himself around and must have rolled holding onto his A+A blanket during his nap and I heard muffled crying and found him with the blanket wrapped all around his head! No more blankets in the crib for me, especially at night.

I think it's ok if baby isn't a big mover, I just have a kid who is all over the place even when asleep and after last week's incident in terrified.
