Traveling with Infants

So I live in NJ & on July 4th my childhood best friend is getting married in Texas. I'm FTM due April 15 with Twins. My husband says no way can we fly with them or take them to hott Texas at 3 months old. We have to make the decision before they're born to book the hotel & flight. I'm torn, I don't want to put my kids in any harm but I hate dissappointing people. Thoughts, advice, please!

  • Sounds like something you have to decide for yourself. Who cares what I think?

I don't see how it would be harmful. Ya, planes are full of germs, but honestly I don't see a huge issue. If you don't want to miss the wedding, I don't see it being an issue. If you don't really want to go, and are looking for an out - yes, that would be an understandable out
For some reason, I read the beginning as "planes are full of gnomes". I was thinking, "Dang, I am flying on the wrong planes."

  • @specialsn0wflake‌ Harmful in the eyes of my husband would be the germ filled airplane & the drastic heat at an outside wedding in Texas in July
  • I feel your pain... We are moving from the East coast, clear across the country to the West coast when LO is 2 months old. I'm still trying to decide if I will drive with DH or fly by myself with LO. :-S

  • An outdoor summer wedding in TX?  I'm in OK and I don't like walking to the mailbox in July.
The plane isn't really any more germy than going to a store or taking your babies to church if your in to that.  But yeah, screw that heat.
  • I live in Singapore (hotter than TX) and will be coming back to the US in May (4-8 wks old depending in Mar 30 accuracy). Not worried about it the heat or the flight. Will bring my own blankets to cover public fabrics/surfaces and such and a boat loads of sanitizing stuffs.

@specialsn0wflake‌ is right. There are likely more "gnomes" at the grocery store. :)

You can also get these fans and things for the stroller. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00KJRAV58?vs=1

Singapore isn't hotter than Texas. Singapore average highs in July are high 80s to low 90s. Here in Texas our high are in the 100s in July.

Just want people to know what they're in for.
    I'd take a dry TX 110 over a humid Sing 90 in a second....... :)

Lived in the South for a few years before Asia. I thought it was humid too......... Until I move to the tropical equator and then came back to visit. The entire US feels dry to me now. But yes, holy different kind of permanent sweaty mess.

Not trying to have a pissing match by any means. Promise. They both suck for a girl that grew up in WI. haha

What's funny is now my sister and I come back to WI (from MT) and she complains about how humid WI is. I laugh at her. :)

Fly! That'll be like tearing off a bandaid, but driving will be like slow torture.
My friend moved Chicago to Houston with a few month old. What should've been a 20 hr drive took 3 full days.......

  • Why don't you go to the wedding? H and babies can either stay home or stay at the hotel?
WSS!  Did your friend attend your wedding? Is a few uncomfortable hours worth possible tension for not attending your best friends wedding?  Can you both go and the babies stay with your parents or in laws? I'd go, if it was me.
  • I flew from Chicago to Texas with a 3 month old all by myself during the month of July. While it's warmer than some regions, it's not unbearable, I live in Texas currently and my child doesn't melt during the summer months.

I live in Arizona =( I would take anything that isn't 116 as a high. I use to live in North Carolina and that got just as bad with the humid.

That's a good way to look at it ... I think I'll take the bandaid route!

  • I almost answered this post saying there is no way I'd make the trip...then remembered I'm planning on flying to Texas in early July with my (hopefully) 3 month old for a family reunion. Oops. After remembering how hot it is there I'm questioning my sanity! At least I'll be on the beach and always within minutes of air conditioning.

Yikes, y'all. Texas isn't that bad! It's fricking hot, but we don't melt. I'm a coastal Texan, but from the very southern portion of the state. I love Texas, and I love the summer. It beckons me to the beach, lake or fishing trips.
I always wanted to go to Corpus Christi. The closest I been to a beach in Texas was in Houston.

  • @shortskirtlongjacket‌ & @specialsn0wflake‌ I can't leave the babies home because I plan on breastfeeding. She was in my wedding party, she isn't having a wedding party. Only 60 guests will be there & the whole wedding - ceremony & reception will be outside. I know people & babies live in Texas but didn't know if such a drastic quick change in temp would be good for the babies. Also if flying with 2 infants would be hell or not esp on a holiday weekend when ticket prices will be jacked up. Has anyone flown with 3 month olds? How was your experience?

In my previous comment, I said that I flew with a 3 month old to Texas right after the 4th of July all by my lonesome. It was fine. Everyone who worked at Ohare was incredibly helpful and kind. And the flight attendants were extra helpful. It's a bit of a disheveled shit show, but it's definitely doable. Life goes on after you have babies...you just adjust your plans to include them.

  • @rsaj0807 That's how I feel about snowbirds in Arizona. We get all the lovely old people from all over including Canada and it literally clogged up the main roads all day long. They will go slow on the main roads but once they turn into Sun City (where they all live) they go ten over the speed limit.

Is it bad during the summer time as well?

Err I live in Texas and I'm due in April. I am highly confused by this post because it sounds like you don't think babies can survive in Texas in July.

Our babies will never last. I don't know how DD2 is still here!
What did they ever do before air conditioning, in Texas?

We flew from Los Angeles to Montreal when my son was 3 months. He mostly slept or nursed. I would suggest using a carrier in the airport and on the plane. We had him on our lap the whole time, and checked our car seat and stroller.

  • Me and the baby be flying/moving back to texas when my baby is almost 4 months. I'll be flying. Be prepared for lots of crying but people can get over it. I'm not too sure what you're worried about because it'll def be worse driving twins 30+ hours to texas. Texas is hot but I mean dress your babies cool and keep them hydrated. It's not like it's 200 degrees there. This past July it wasn't even 100 where I lived in Texas.
