Celia to honor Cecilia?

So this is an odd question because I am talking about a book not a person. H and I have always wanted to use names from books we love as a FN for our child. We have chosen Oscar after the character Oskar in a book called Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. My favorite book is The Virgin Suicides and I would love to use a name from it but the only one I slightly like is Cecilia but it is to frilly sounding for me. We both however really like Celia.

Would it be weird to use Celia to honor my favorite book? We changed the spelling of Oskar so he doesn't think it is a stretch to shorten up a name for mine. Thoughts?

Re: Celia to honor Cecilia?

  • I think it's fine. As long as you know what it means, that's all that matters. Not like anyone else is going to know that it was "supposed" to be Cecelia.

This. No one is going to say, "CELIA?! Did you mean Cecilia like that chick in The Virgin Suicides?"
Hahaha. We would like her to know someday she was named for the book but you do have a point. None of my friends have read the book.

You don't like Lux? That's always been a GP name for me. Celia is beautiful and no one will know the difference!
I am hot and cold on Lux but my best friend has chosen it as a future DD name and therefore it is off limits for me. She doesn't own it but she would be devastated and I would feel guilty.

  • No, I actually think that's a completely rational inspiration for a name.  Celia is a great choice!

I feel like people shouldn't get dibs on names for hypothetical children but I know that's not the way the world (and best friendships in particular) works. I love Celia though and would probably choose it over Lux, too!
Oh I agree. Its not like dibs was called but if she had a boy and used Oscar I would be heartbroken even though I have no real reason to be. So since Lux isn't THE name I have just crossed it off entirely.

  • Celia is nice. Cecily is another variant for Cecilia which isn't too frilly IMO.

  • I like Celia! Not a stretch from Cecilia at all.

  • Celia is very pretty. If we have a girl, her middle name will most likely be Cecile, named after DH's grandmother who spelled it Cecil.

I think it will be all fine
  • Celia is lovely but I think Cecilia is even better. Unfortunately DH has an ex-GF by that name so no go for us.
I'm going to throw a spanner in the works and say you have to use the exact name from the book if that's what you are trying to honour.
  • I prefer Cecile or Cecily

  • You're fine :)
  • You're not really honoring anyone, you're just inspired by the book.  I mean, Cecilia isn't a real person, she's a fictional character.  With that in mind, you can use whatever name you like.

But...but...but that character is so tragic. I don't even understand wanting to honor her in any way? I'm sorry, it is bothering me.
It doesn't change my love for the book.

To give you an idea... I love Juliet for Romeo and Juliet which is tragic as well. We also have Hannah on our list for the book The Reader who was less than admirable. We like Simon from the Lord of the Flies and he gets murdered. If you have read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close you would probably find Oskar a bad choice. Naomi for a book called Animals. It is a story involving heavy cannibalism. Ophelia who kills her self in Hamlet is also on our long list.

So that doesn't really matter much to us.
