April 2014 Moms

What are you doing with the stuff that is no longer used?

As most of you know, I'm a FTM. We're pretty sure we want at least one more baby, shooting to get pregnant when she's almost 2. So I'm keeping the essential stuff like the PNP (which she's using now anyway), car seat, stroller, bouncer, swing. I'm thinking I'm wanting to sell the stuff she doesn't/won't use anymore. I've already sold her sleeper [RNP], and now I'm thinking about selling her exersaucer. She wants nothing to do with it since she's been on the move! I'm giving her activity mat to her little cousin also.

Is there any reason I should be keeping this stuff that I'm maybe not thinking of? I'm contemplating getting rid of a lot of it just because our storage is very limited, and I want the clutter kept to a minimum. I realize ultimately we're losing money in the long run since we're not getting as much for it as what we paid and will have to get the same kind of stuff again when/if baby #2 is here, but it seems worth it if it means less clutter and money in our pockets right now!

  • Since I'm unsure if we want to have a second child (DH keeps talking about getting snipped since Alera was unplanned, heh), most of the stuff she outgrows is going to my youngest SIL, who's expecting her third (another girl, too) next year. It works rather nicely, since she's handing down to Alera some stuff that her 4-year-old girl is outgrowing; as long as it's in good condition it'll be coming back to her for her new one eventually!

  • I am a FTM as well and are planning on having another kid within the next year or so and we are keeping everything.  Storage is not really an issue for us and I know that is a factor for you.  If you don't have the room selling it may be a good idea.  You can always purchase used items the next time around to save some money.

Yes, same here! My sister has an almost 2 year old daughter, so Edolie got a lot of my niece's things, and now she's having a second girl next month, so she's getting all of that back and some of Edolie's new clothes. lol I'm only keeping the clothes I really like in case we have another girl.

You're totally right - I could buy used the next time around! Didn't even think about that.

Thankfully I was gifted everything we have now except her activity mat, exersaucer and her new car seat, so it's not like I had to purchase most of it the first time around anyway.

  • We are one and done so it's a little easier to clear the clutter without much thought. Any awesome clothes are being kept so Nana can make a scrap quilt and everything else I turn into the children's consignment store for credit or cash, anything they don't want they donate and give you an extra $5 credit.
  • I kept the rnp, pnp, seat and activity mat. I only kept my favorite clothes. When I found out George was a boy, I wanted to buy him some of his own clothes anyway. We have lots of storage now and will hopefully be here for 3 years so we are saving it all because DH brother and his wife are trying to get pregnant.
  • We would like another at some point, so keeping everything. Our attic is a mess, but it's at the top of my list to organize/get rid of other crap over my Christmas break.

  • We have some storage but not a ton. We've kept our favorites for clothing items, handed down the rest to a friend. We sold the rnp, jumperoo and some other misc items that were no longer needed. We plan on keeping the playmat, bathseat and most toys for baby #2. I don't think we will keep our travel system, for the next baby I plan on getting a convertible car seat from the get go, but it hasn't been decided yet.
  • We don't have a lot of storage space either, but I want to keep what I can in the hopes of another LO! We discovered mice in the shed recently, so that option's out. Right now things like the bumbo, swing and baby tub are in our guest room, which will actually be handy to have accessible over the holidays when friends with younger babies visit.

We had a lot of hand me downs, so I donated a lot of clothes we didn't use. The ones we are keeping are under the bed in the guest room, sorted by age. I need to get another bin for receiving blankets and such. Things I picked up used like the exersaucer I will probably pass them along and then just buy used again next time.

It's crazy how fast they grow out of things!
  • After DS1 I kept about half of his clothes. I just put them into rubbermaid bins and stacked them in the closet. We kept all the big ticket items in my husband's office. It was a pain and a bit cluttered, but since we knew we wanted another fairly soon it was worth the hassle. This time around we are getting rid of a few of the bigger items (like the swing) and will re-buy them used when we decide to go for baby #3. We also bought most of the big ticket items used in the first place, so I don't feel so bad about getting rid of them.

  • Trading stuff in that you can keep at a resale store for in store credit helps, we do that to buy things that DS now needs or will need in the next few months.
  • I'm keeping everything. I'm stingy like that.
  • I am also struggling with this. I am giving me away most clothes cause who knows next (season, sex, size) but things like exersaucer, bathtub, jumperoo, etc are big... I think lending to friends and family is a great option. Some one else gets use out of it and you get it out of your house for a year?! We will keep carriers, boppy, blankets, etc cause easy to store.

  • We're done with kids but I'm keeping everything for my brother. I probably have 12 bins of baby cloths. We have a crap ton of storage though.
  • I would love to loan my sister the swing, bouncer, etc., but she lives with my mom, stepdad and boyfriend who all smoke inside. :( This makes me so sad for multiple reasons.

  • We're storing as much as we can, since we plan on TTC very soon.  I don't know what's available in your area, but some places have tiny storage units for pretty cheap.  Might be worth looking into or might not.

  • We kept and stored just about everything after my DS, and now that we have DD we are done.  I have a few pregnant friends and family that I am giving everything away too. Many people gave us things and I want to pay ir forward...and get stuff out of my house!
  • Depending on how much of a germophobe you are I second (or third) buying used. I saved so much buying things used. Because I bought and resold so close together, within 6 months, I got the same price back as I paid.

We have zero storage space so most of our bigger things that we got new are getting stored in my parents garage and my childhood bedroom.
  • I saved everything from my daughter. Let me tell you, even though we had a boy this time around, we used a ton of her stuff! I even went through her clothes and used the gender neutral colors and onesies. I lucked out, and everything that we got for her was pretty gender neutral anyway. I'm a hoarder though. We're done and I still am having a hard time getting rid of baby stuff.
  • I am selling most of the twin sets of clothes and a few items I found I didn't use or like, but storing most everything else in hopes that my brother and his wife will be able to adopt (they have infertility struggles, too) and I can pass it on to them. It is unlikely that I will have more, but I'm not ready to close that door and part with it completely.  "Keeping it in the family" seems like a good compromise.
