First fall :(

My Mom visited today and was watching L practice crawling in the hallway and L's arms slipped out and she fell face planted onto the hardwood pretty hard. She wears a helmet for plagicephaly, so I'm pretty sure her helmet made the noise I heard, but she screamed and cried for a good 10 minutes like I've never heard her cry. :( I cried too...
I nursed her and she was ok afterwards, laughing and playing as normal until bedtime.

I've heard that you should check on them every hour after a fall..should I wake her up?
I feel so terrible!!!

Re: First fall :(

  • Aww...poor baby and mama. That must have been scary, I'm sure she's fine. Mine falls all over the place now that he's pulling up on things and his helmet seems to keep him safe and sound, though it can make quite an impressive sound :)

This will probably be the first of many falls for all of our babies now that they're becoming mobile - way to keep their mamas on their toes.

  • Ok, she was awake a good 2 hours after the fall and was happy and playing. I'm staying up a bit later to wake her up around 10:30 and check her and then nurse.
Just to be sure she's ok! What a scary sound :(
  • Sorry, it can be scary! DS has been hitting his head every day it seems on walls, crib, ground and will give a brief cry and move on. I haven't checked on him during sleep after but I wouldn't blame you for doing so either.
  • Falling and bumping into things is now commonplace in our house, but the first time it happened was terrifying!

Pedi told me that if they react immediately and calm down, breathe and act normal following the fall they should be fine. I was told not to wake him while he was sleeping, but keep an eye out for any signs of odd breathing or trouble waking. Also keep an eye out for any bruising or bumps, irritability or unusual fussiness. A fall from up to 3' is usually fine he said. Crazy to think, but the babies were built to tolerate some falls and bumps as they learn how to crawl and walk :) but be still our mama hearts as they do!
