No choice but to get an X-ray

edited December 2014 in July 2015 Moms
So i had to get my finger X-rayed because it is likely broken and its what my doctor ordered. I'm 8w3d....They freaked me out about it through the whole process the way they made such a big deal over me being an expectant mother and needing this done. I needed to sign a waver and everything and therefore felt unsure of it all (And was hesitant at first)They informed me that there's a small risk involved. I went ahead and did it anyway......Should i be worried???

PS
I was double shielded for added protection so that makes me feel extra good

Re: No choice but to get an X-ray

  • DD pulled my night table over on her foot about a week before my BFP. I went with her to urgent care and she was freaking out (she's 22 months) and so I went in for her X-ray. They asked if I could be pregnant and I said I might be (but I was doubtful) so they put a screen in front of me. She was squirmy and I did a terrible job staying behind it, so I was def freaked out that I was exposed when I found out. My Dr told me that if I had had an abdominal X-ray she wouldn't have been thrilled but that as you move away from your exposure is reduced exponentially.

Also, she told me that back in the day they used to do abdominal X-rays on expectant mothers to see how much their pelvis had spread, so pleanty of people have survived that just fine.

  • My SIL had a chest X-Ray when she was about 20w.  Her son is almost 3 now and perfect!
  • I work around X-ray all the time.  If you were double layered and it was just your finger, you will be fine.  The typical exposure distance(of machines at my hospital) is 6 ft, but some machines its even less.

Don't stress about it, i'm sure everything is fine!

  • You should be fine!!!  My mother was in the second half of her first trimester with me when the Czarnobyl thing exploded, and rained my village with a shit load of radiation. I mean, probably a tone more than a little finger x-ray, as people would get sick within a day from being exposed to it. Because she was pregnant, she was unable to take the treatment they offered for people.  Today, I am fine (although, I have dumbo ears, which I jokingly often attribute to the extra radiation).  My mother is as healthy as a horse!  Always has been! You will be fine!!!

  • I've had to have a few dental x-rays this time around.  They double shielded me so hopefully it will all be fine, but I'd be lying if I said I'm not the smallest bit worried about it.  It helps to know that it isn't that uncommon.

  • I had a chest X-ray when I was pregnant with DS1. My doctor was not concern at all, she just requested that I waited until the 2nd trimester. Luckily it was not an emergency x-Ray so I could wait until I made it to 14 weeks. Just make sure you tell the techs that you are preggers so they can take all the necessary precautions. It will be fine. Good luck!
  • I too had to have an X-ray on a tooth that was giving me intolerable pain. My doctor was so kind and explained the dangers and then when I made my decision he informed me that the radiation level is lower than flying on an airplane. Your health is important in this pregnancy too, don't stress yourself out over it.
  • Thanks to all of you for reassuring me that there shouldn't be any negative outcome from this and for putting my mind at ease!!
  • I had a chest X-ray during my first pregnancy. They double shielded me and everything turned out fine. I too was a little worried but sometimes it's unavoidable.

  • I broke my foot pretty bad days before I got my BFP.  They x-rayed me twice before I knew I was definitely pregnant, but triple-shielded me just for extra protection.  You'll be fine - as long as its not a chest x-ray or anything.

You can also do ultrasounds or MRIs.  Once I was around 6 weeks pregnant, my doctor recommended not doing an x-ray, so I'm getting an ultrasound in 2 weeks on my foot to see how its healing.  So, while not as great as an x-ray, there are other options.

The x-ray techs know what their doing, and will protect you as much as you want to be! Baby will be fine - don't worry!
