is my baby getting enough?

Just wondering what you ladies think about this, because I'm not sure what to do. For the past week my ebf baby(16 weeks old if it matters) has been eating every hour all day and waking up every hour all night to eat. He used to sttn more or less, just curious if this is a normal growth spurt or if my supply might be dwindling for some reason. Thanks in advance :)

Re: is my baby getting enough?

  • It's similar for us, except it's every two hours, which was our normal during the day anyway but he's been doing it at night now and well.... I'm tired lol

Seems like a growth spurt to me, but just in case I'm trying to drink more water :) here's hoping it's not a permanent thing!!

  • Yes! I'm exhausted lol I feel like a dried up tired raisin. Well hopefully it won't last too long..

  • My LO is every 2 hours during the day with one 4-5 hour stretch at night lately (she use to sleep through the night). Yesterday, after BF her and having her pull off a bunch of times, I noticed she was still showing signs if hunger (sucking on hands, whining). So, I fed her. She took an extra pumped 2 ozs twice last night and once this morning too! I have noticed I'm not getting as much when I pump too! It sucks ass, but I don't think I'm keeping up.

This is us exactly.  This is our fourth week of this crap.  I am back at work and DH gives her bottles during the day so I know she is getting enough.  She will not drink more than 4oz, even if offered, and she won't go longer than 2 hours between feedings. It sucks!

  • Most likely growth- we had been feeding every 3 hours, then the past week and a half was every 2 again. And now we are at 3.5 hours, with a much bigger baby!
  • It totally sounds like a growth spurt. This is how baby signals your body to make more. Unless directed otherwise by your pedi, avoid supplementing and let baby nurse nurse nurse while you drink lots of water so your supply adjusts to feed your growing baby. Supplementing may cause your supply to fall further and further behind over time.

That said, if it's too stressful to keep nursing, no one says you have to 100% EBF. You can keep nursing while offering a little formula from time to time. Happy mama, happy baby.
  • Thanks so much for the replies! :) I guess I'll keep chugging and hopefully my body gets the memo. Glad to know it's probably a growth spurt.
