Change in food, change in BM?

Since day 1 our LO has been FF. He has a BM about once a day, which our doctor said is normal for FF babies. Occasionally he would skip a day, or have 2 BMs in one day, but it has been very rare.

Yesterday I switched him from Newborn Formula to Infant Gentlease Formula. Yesterday was also his first day at the babysitter's. She sends home a report every day on his diapers and whatnot and she said he had THREE BMs yesterday. He also had one that morning before we brought him over so he had a total of FOUR in one day. That has never happened to him - ever. The babysitter said she even fed him less ounces because he wasn't taking the whole 5 oz....and he still pooped 4 times.

It's still the same brand of formula just a different type, but I can't believe that it would change that much. Have any other FF noticed a change in their LOs BM, after switching formulas?

Re: Change in food, change in BM?

  • We rotated slowly but we noticed a difference when we moved from ready-to-eat to powder.  We also even noticed a complete change in baby when my MIL used tap water instead of the nursery water we had been using to make formula.  I've talked to my pedi and she cautioned us against changing ANYTHING to do with her feedings suddenly (water we use, brand we use, etc) because it can mess with her digestive system. (After the tummy problems we had after the tap water fiasco, I believe it!) It seems like any slight shift can be like a wreaking ball through our baby's system, so I wouldn't be surprised if less sensitive babies (or maybe mine is normal??) had issues with changes as well.

  • It's normal. With DD, a time I changed her formula she would get constipated but would go back to three times a day after about a week. Even tho it was the same brand. With DS, when I was supplementing I used ready to feed and he would poop normal like 3-4 times a day, when I switched to powder he would poop once a day, he was only getting 4-5 oz. my pedi says that 2-4 months BMs fluctuate they may be more or less, depending on a different number of things and the digestive system is maturing.
  • i wouldn't worry. we had a big change when we switched from liquid to powder, and every time we go to my mom's house for a few days, he gets really backed up due to the difference in the water! it's nuts how sensitive they can be.

  • Yes.  We started out pumping and supplementing -- regular poops.  At 6 weeks we moved to FF ready to feed-- poop every 2-3 days.  At 9 weeks we moved to powder -- poop once or twice a day.  He didn't seem to like the powder so we are back to ready to feed -- he's back to every other day.
