Colposcopy and biopsy-thoughts?

So I'm 17 weeks and I need a colposcopy and my doc really wants to do the biopsy bc I have high grade displasia....but I'm really nervous about the biopsy. The colposcopy is fine but she's being very persistent on the biopsy...anyone been there or know anything? I has this done once before and I was pregnant and I ended up mis carrying right after-I was only 11 weeks-could have nothing to do with it but maybe it could. That's my biggest reason of worry.

Re: Colposcopy and biopsy-thoughts?

  • I had a colonoscopy last year and was KNOCKED out. I would be surprised if anyone would let you go under anesthesia while pregnant, but I am not an expert. You need to talk to your OB.

  • I had one done at 15 weeks because a very high grade displasia. I wasn't not knocked out, she gave me some shots to help me stop from bleeding, a stool softener and anti nausea medicine so I wouldn't put more pressure on my cervix. I was put on pelvic rest and bed rest for two weeks. My results came back as pre cancerous so she will do another one after I have the baby. If I get the same results then she will cut some the bad area of my cervix.

  • I had one and the biopsy while in 2 nd tri with my second son. She used a paste to stop the bleeding when she was done. I had some cramping but just took it super easy for a couple days and all in all everything was fine. Good luck in what ever your decision is.

I had a leep 3 years ago and they are not monitoring my cervix however I have placenta previa and just had a partial placental abrubtion. I don't know if their is any corolation but I now am being watched more carefully and will have many more ultra sounds to check on baby.
  • I have my final year after the LEEP procedure colposcopy next Tuesday and I am nervous. I originally had this appointment in my first tri but they moved it to my second as it is safer? I hope everything is fine and I don't have to be on bed rest and/or take it too easy.
  • They can do a colpscopy without doing a biopsy, although typically they are done at the same time.  They place a dye on your cervix to better identify the abnormal areas and then that's when they would typically also biopsy those areas.

I would be worried about having it done, but would most likely still go ahead with it.  Did your pap test results include an hpv test?  Do you have an active hpv infection?  If so, that would highly motivate me to push forward with more testing.  Your immune system is weakened during pregnancy making having an active hpv infection, and for a longer time, more likely.  Having that can really increase the rate at which things go from normal to bad to worse to cancer.

Not to scare anyone, but I had a normal pap result at the beginning of my fourth pregnancy and then just about 8 months later at my post-partum exam I had another pap which came back as high-grade dysplasia.  I had a colposcopy and biopsy which showed stage-0 cervical cancer.  My doctor recommended a hysterectomy but because I wanted another pregnancy I opted for a Leep instead.  Cervical cancer is nothing to fool around with so please get things checked out.

And to answer the other question regarding having your cervix monitored in pregnancy after a Leep, yes, my doc is doing a few cervical length checks, more to calm my nerves than that he believes it's medically necessary.  My ob told me that Leeps rarely cause complications in pregnancy.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

  • I had a leep a couple of years before my DD. I continued having abnormal PAPs after and a couple more coloposcopies including one while I was pregnant. Luckily my doc didn't think it was bad enough to biopsy while I was pregnant, but she would have done it if necessary. I will warn you ladies who have had leeps though, turns out I had scarring on my cervix from the leep that prevented me from dilating with my DD. It was horrifyingly painful when I went into labor and they had to rip the scarring out to allow me to dilate...also horrifyingly painful. I am told I will be fine this time though. On the upside my PAPs are normal now:)
  • I had a colposcopy and a biopsy taken from the center of my cervix. At the time we didn't know I was pregnant. I ended up being about 6 weeks at the time. My biopsy came back fine but my doctor wants to monitor the dysplasia after the baby is born. I was terrified to have the procedure so I did tons of research. If it is cervical cancer, you are likely to have bleeding anyway. I don't know if this can lead to a miscarriage or not. I would share your concerns with your doctor and maybe get a second opinion also. I know how scared I was and I didn't know I was pregnant at the time. I can't imagine how I would have been if I had known. Good luck and I hope everything is okay!!
