I was surprised at my OB's reaction when I called to ask about some spotting...

Friday morning I woke up and found fresh red blood when I wiped after peeing.  My OB's office was closed and I didn't think it was an emergency since it wasn't enough to stain my underwear.  I laid back down for a couple of hours and it seemed to stop.  My DH and I ran some errands that afternoon, and when we got home it had started again, but still not too heavy.  It had gotten a little heavier and stained the panty liner, but just a little.  It didn't saturate it.  I called the on-call OB and she actually suggested that I go to the ER.  This shocked me because I thought for sure she would say to take it easy, drink fluids, etc.  I asked if it was necessary for me to go to the ER and she said I certainly didn't have to, but she knew I would feel better if I got the reassurance of going in to get an ultrasound. I decided against going to the ER because I didn't feel it met the "emergency" criteria.  I wasn't hemorrhaging or having severe pain or cramps. I called to follow up this morning and they had me come in for an appointment.  Thankfully, baby's HB was strong. As it turns out, my uterus is tilted way forward and pressing against my bladder and cervix.  She asked if I had cramping or pressure in my pubic area.  I told her yes, but I thought it was normal during pregnancy (this is my first so I don't know what "normal" feels like). She said I am experiencing the amount of pressure that most women feel after 35 weeks when the baby "drops."  She said no sex for a couple weeks and to come back for weekly appointments for awhile.  My cervix is closed up nice and tight right now, but she wants to keep an eye on it.  Moral of the story, TB members are wonderfully supportive and I I love the wealth of information and support they give.  If it weren't for reading about other's experiences, I probably WOULD have freaked out!  But if something feels odd, check with your doctor.  I was ready to write the mild spotting off as a normal occurrence, but it may be the start of something my OB will need to closely monitor.  (I am still shocked she suggested I go to the ER just to be reassured.)

  • How far along are you?

With my second son my OB told me to go to the ER for spotting because he couldn't see me or get me into the office for an us. I went to the ER had an us and they reported back the findings to my OB. Mine wasn't anything to be concerned with at the time. I thought that may be normal practice when you are farther along, maybe wrong.

    Glad everything is ok!
    Fucking bump!!!!

Thank you!  I am just 14+2 weeks pregnant.  I am very relieved.  I am also pissed at DH because he acts like I have been over exaggerating every little thing and being over dramatic all the time.  The OB was shocked I hadn't come in earlier.  She said she couldn't imagine  how uncomfortable I have been.  I am on sex restriction for awhile and modified pelvic rest for a little while.  The sex restriction serves him right!
