Cloth Diapering

Help! (Rash Q w/ PIP)

so my kids have bad/sensitive skin. It's just how it is, so as long as it's not bothering them I try not to spaz about every little red spot.

F has been bad in the diaper area since day 1 but his ped was never super concerned and we both agreed it was eczema. It improved as I took things out of my diet and kept him well lotioned. This week has been getting worse and worse though with no explanation. Now this morning we woke up and it looks like this pic. My first thought was yeast, but it's actually better in the cracks and that's where his skin is actually clear. Then I thought maybe detergent (we use Tide). I'll call his ped when they open tomorrow, but do you guys have any thoughts? Is it just a weird eczema flare? Something else? Should I grab some disposables and lomotrin and see if it helps?

Ftr: even when his skin is "good" it's still splotchy like his face

  • L has similar skin issues, and his diaper area will get like this if he's in natural fibers for several hours at night without a liner. Could that be what happened here?

  • I'd look at the amount of tide. Maybe hot water strip? I had some issues similar to this with Tide. I think I was using too much in the beginning. I also did a good amount of lotion, and a few minutes of open air time after.

  • Aw, poor sweetie.

I think it's worth trying a detergent that doesn't have enzymes and fragrances in them.

DS has eczema, and other than when he had wetness sensitivity as an infant (and we were using Bac-out during that time), and other minor issues that we've been able to troubleshoot, his diaper area is actually the healthiest patch of skin on him. We've always used a CD-safe detergent -- Country Save, Tiny Bubbles, MioCare -- whatever we are able to get.

We were using a mainstream detergent for our regular laundry, but recently I've been trying out some other brands that are enzyme and fragrance free, and he is doing slightly better.
  • Ouch! Poor F :(

I would attempt a disposable with lots of cream. See if it makes any difference at all...then go from there. Changing too much will make it hard to decide what's working to clear it. But I think if his creases are clear-some kind of contact dermatitis (maybe the tide?)

  • The thing is that fragrances and brighteners are designed to stick to the fibers, so those things can be contributing factors to eczema. Even if you don't have detergent buildup.

I've read different things about enzymes, as to how well they rinse out or not, but some people seem to think that they can also irritate sensitive skin.

Country Save, Charlie's and Nellies are all prime, but it looks like those are quantities. I only did a quick search. Maybe you can look around for some sample sizes. I think Jillians sells a detergent sampler.
  • I get Nellie's on Prime. I can send you a couple of loads worth if you don't want to start with a whole box. But it takes me forever to get things shipped, fair warning.
