Gallbladder (stones) and diet

Hello all. I am actually father of baby, but I have a question. I hope I can get some help.

Mother of baby has been having pain associated with nausea. We went to the ERA today to be told that she has gall stones. I have been trying to find diet plans on Google. But they are vague.

Can anyone direct me to meal plans for pregnant women with gallbladder problems? When I read online they all say avoid this or that some say chicken is ok so say no. Same with pork. Some say lean meats are fine. Some say no meats at all. It is confusing.

Does anyone have meal plans for situations like this? I tried to think of high fiber low fat but some of those meals has stuff that people with gall stones should avoid.

Any help would be wonderful.

Re: Gallbladder (stones) and diet

  • Hi! That must be really rough for her, especially since pregnancy can already make a diet a difficult thing to manage. I don't personally have any experience with gallbladder stones but my husband gets kidney stones and I know that in those cases it's essential to limit sodium intake and try to avoid fast food. I know it's definitely a different medical scenario, but that's what I know from at least a spousal perspective.
I did find a long list of dietary recommendations from gallbladderattack.com (I have no idea whether you've already come across it), but another thing that might be worthwhile is asking if a local hospital or specialist has any recommendations. I know sometimes they'll have printed sheets of diet do's and don'ts that might even be able to be emailed.
I hope it all works out!

  • I had my gallbladder removed years ago and the diet they put you on is one with low gas producing foods. So none of the obvious things such as beans/spicey foods/etc but also not as obvious like cucumbers and orange juice.

    Good luck!!

  • The gallbladder stores bile, and releases it to aid in the digestion of fats. The pain associated with gall stones is from the gallbladder contracting to release bile, and pushing stones into the ducts.
So, low fat and non fat foods are your best bets to minimizing the pain. And once baby is out, gall bladder can get removed (once it is inflamed, it does not heal itself).
Been there, done that, and those stones are more painful than childbirth. Good luck!
  • I had mine out about two years ago, because it was basically nothing but stones. Felt infinity better after that.

The only diet specific thing I remember them telling me is to stay away from fatty foods, particularly fried things. Which I pretty much never eat anyway, so at least that part was easy.
