In need of advice about a potential job opportunity

Hi everyone! So I've been a lurker until now but decided to come out of hiding because I need your ladies advice!! I'm a FTM due at the end on May.

I currently have a job that I like with great coworkers and decent liveable pay. But it was never my intention to make this job a permanent career. It was always suppose to be a place holder until my dream job opened up. Today, I was just contacted by a friend who said there may be an opportunity at her company next year. They would want me to work as a temp for 6 months and then there is a possibility of a position but it is not guaranteed and there are a lot of politics. This job is my dream job and the company hasn't hired since 2008. However, I would really be taking a gamble because I would be giving up my current job with hopes that the temp position will turn into something more. If it doesn't, I will end up unemployed and DH and I can't afford for me to be a SAHM for very long. Also, if I lose my job, the likelihood of finding a similar one with the same pay would be slim since I've worked my way up. With LO on its way in 6 months, its definitely a gamble. What would you do? Take a risk or wait it out? DH says its my call.

  • Temp to perm jobs usually go to perm if you are a good fit. I say go for it. If it's really your dream job....then don't let it slip between your fingers. GL!

  • When would the temp job start? The timing would be really tricky with your maternity leave and there's a chance you would be left without any pay while on your leave or a job to return to. I agree with PP that it's worth trying to get an interview to get more information and discuss your opportunities and concerns.

  • Do the interview. If this opportunity comes up it wouldn't be a bad thing to at least give that a shot. Just because you interview doesn't mean you're going to get/have to take an offer.

Keep in mind though, it may be a long hiring process. Some places take upwards to 3 months. So by the time you're hired for a temporary position, you may only have 3 months left until the baby.

Also, don't say anything about your pregnancy. Physically it may be pretty obvious, but until an offer is on the table don't make it a topic of the interview process. It's illegal for them to ask or make any decisions based on a pregnancy.
