Switching Prenatal Care

Okay, so after thinking about it long and hard, I decided I do want to switch to a more "natural birth friendly" midwife practice and hospital.

Well when I called the new practice today.  they want me to do a nurse intake, and all my original OB tests that I have already done. I find this ridiculous. I don't want to sit through an hour presentation about pregnancy, or get all the tests redone. I've already done this! I just want to schedule a midwife appointment in a month (which is on schedule with what I am doing now).

Do you think that is reasonable?

The lady on the phone had NO clue what she was talking about, and so maybe it was just her.

Do you think I should argue this? And try to get out of the nurse intake and the OB panel? Or do you think those are reasonable requirements?

  • Personally, if I had already done them I wouldn't do it again. What's the point of doing something twice? If the paperwork and results can be transferred then let that be enough.
  • I am switching right now and they require my records be transferred but didn't seem to need to redo anything.

  • viola27 no its not. Its a presentation given by an RN, with 5-10 other women who are newly pregnant, about pregnancy....

An hour is a big deal, because they only do it at 9 AM, which means I have to miss work to go, to a completely pointless appointment.

@jenanns did you have to do a nurse intake, before they would schedule you with a midwife?

  • I wouldn't want to do it, but I think it's reasonable when you switch practices to be asked to sit through their new patient procedure. As far as the bloodwork, perhaps they run different things. I think it's fine to ask if you can transfer your records, but if you want to switch and they say no, I think you just deal with it.

  • I have never heard of having to sit through a presentation before going to a doctor. But maybe a natural birth center is different, I have no experience there.

I wouldnt do it. My OB asks all of his patients to see a genetic counselor no matter the history at your 12 week NT scan. I sat there for 10 minutes...was told she was going to be another 15 - 20 minutes before she could see me, so I got up and left.  TIme is precious and that to me should be something that is MY decision, not my doctors...
  • I agree with the wanting records just so they can see where you are etc but the nurse intake seems like BS. I'd tell them she is more than welcome

  • When I switched to a new OB after being with my RE for years they had me do the bloodwork all over again and also a pap, even though I just had one with my RE. I didn't really question it since I was a new patient with no prior history with them I just figured that was part of their process.

  • No I did not have to do a nurse intake before they would schedule the appointment.  They only required that they have my reccords 5 days before my appointment....which turned out to be hard and I need to check in with them just to make sure they got them on time before I go in Friday.

  • I would understand not wanting to redo bloodwork and u/s because those are things that can be easily transferred over records but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask you to attend their welcoming/introduction seminar.  You wanted a more involved team and that is what you are getting.
I agree with this. I thought more talking, especially about natural birth, is what you wanted. The panel will be about their approach to birth, which is what you wanted to talk about with the other midwife last night.

  • I am switching not just because of the tone of one midwife, the more I think about it, I am feeling uncomfortable with the services at the hospital I was going to be delivering at. I think overall, this second hospital will be better at fitting for what I am looking for.

Its not "crunchy", it just has a well established midwifery program that really welcomes natural birth.

I don't think that the intake will be sitting around talking about natural birth. Its not even 1:1. It will be more general for like newly pregnant women, which I am not.

I am just annoyed that its so complicated to move practices. Gah!
