Any decorating ideas for a free (but less than chic) rocker?

My mother gave us an incredibly comfy La Z Boy, which will save us several hundred bucks. The problem is we are working with a 10x10 space- every inch counts. I originally wanted a white and gray nursery to go with our already blue walls. This chair we've been given is blue jean blue and is not awful but kind of takes a little thinking about. I am horrible with decorating. I also feel like our dresser is so big!

Can anyone make any recommendations for color patterns or ideas in general to work with what we've been given? Here are pictures of the little bit we have so far.

  • Have you thought about changing tile colors of the walls? I'm thinking a more grey walls will look good with that chair.

I think the dresser is fine, it looks nice. You could always throw a changing pad on top and use for a changing table. I'm actually going to use a sideboard for my dresser/changing table.

  • Not sure about the color of the walls.  I like the idea of a blue gray.  Also your dresser is perfect to put the changing pad on top of it.  Thats what we did with DD.  Saves room by doing that way.
  • One thing you could do, too, since reupholstering the chair will be ridiculously expensive - get a large blanket in either a neutral color or a print you love and use that as a kind of cover over the back and seat of the chair- that will make be arms be the only part that take over color wise

  • Dresser looks good!  I second above and say turn the top into a changing table.. I might repaint it the color white you want, and add new vintage looking knobs once I found out the sex... maybe even stencil a little design on the top shelf right in the middle...

For the chair you can have it recovered... denim won't dye very well, it bleaches out but will still look like denim.  I would cover it with blankets maybe?  I am not very knowledgeable on dying chairs...

  • I love the current colors of your walls.  I would try to get a generic armchair slipcover.  I've seen them forsale between $50 and $100.  Or if you're crafty at all you can drape a sheet or piece of fabric and throw some stitches in it so it lays correctly.

  • Thanks for the suggestions!

DH doesn't understand my stress. It feels like this is a motherly thing to do and it's driving me nuts!

I like the wall color and dresser.  I would look into a slip cover or just get a large blanket to drape over the top or arm.  Between a blanket draping part of it and a pillow, I think you can camoflauge it enough to not bother you much.

  • Is that an IKEA Hemnes dresser?  It looks identical to ours.  If so, it seems big at first but you could pretty much put all of the babys clothes plus blankets, etc in there.  My 4 year old currently has all of her clothes in ours.  We don't switch clothes out seasonally and she has a lot of clothes so the dresser will be good for awhile.  Also, we got one of the changing pads to put on the top and it worked perfectly as our only changing table.  I did get some of the grippy type shelf liner to put under the changing pad though, once I put a cover on the pad, the little grippy things on the bottom didn't seem to reach the top of the dresser anymore.

  • I like your wall color but agree that with the blue chair a gray wall would be better - plus I love gray walls if you get the right color of gray that is not too dark and has blue tones in it.  Then you can use combinations of gray, blue jean blue and another accent color like yellow, or even small touches of red.

If you don't want to repaint then slipcover is probably a good option - I have never really liked the way the slip covers end up fitting on chairs and sofas and if it reclines that makes it even a bit trickier.
