Christmas Shopping for SO

Re: Christmas Shopping for SO

  • Um, get him the things he wants? Is that too obvious and answer? Go to a cool men's haberdashery and find some awesome hats. Win!

My fiancé and I are getting married five days before Christmas this year, so we aren't doing Christmas gifts. My wedding present to him will be a sake set and nice sake.

  • @tinalovescauliflower Now there's a thought! But that's not how I work.  Christmas is huge in our family. 3 smalls gifts is not nearly enough between 20 family members. Giving gifts makes me so happy and getting something that is really spectacular is what i'm going for.  I like to be creative and find things not on his list that he would love.

I see. In that case I'd look around for blog posts on top tech toys of this year, or go antiquing in your area to find stuff that would appeal to him. It wasn't clear to me from your first post that you were looking for a big wow factor that wasn't something he asked for.

Can you get him a fancy bourbon or rye whiskey, mixers/bitters, and a nice cocktail shaker, and glass?  That way it's a nice little kit.  DH loves old fashion drinks and has a special glass just for them...he also bought these cool ice cube makers that make one huge ice cube, so the drink stays nice and cool - just search for giant ice molds online.

  • Id love to see a thread get started about budget Christmas gifts. We are trying very hard to live on one paycheck until the baby is born so we can have me take a leave of absence next year. That said, DH and I have always spent so much on each other. Like, we were supposed to do very light gifts for for our anniversary and DH still went out and spent 150 on me. It's sweet but I really want to see what a one- income Christmas looks like. :/

  • @Poppy715 That's exactly what he meant. Men will be men
But the old fashioned whiskey stuff wasn't a bad idea.
See I'm not totally delusional! Give him the best HJ he's ever had! GL figuring something out.

Would your H like a photo calendar? I made one for DH a few Christmas' ago. He loved it. It was full of pictures of us and our families. I think that's a nice tradition.

  • This year we are totally cutting back - so he's probably getting just things he'd need to buy anyway :( like new mats for his car, socks/underwear, a few other items. I did find a decanter that I really liked for him (he's a whiskey, scotch and wine fan) so I think I may try to swing that as well.

In the last couple years, I also got him a punching bag (for workouts indoors, he loves it), a gift certificate for flight lessons (he got to actually fly an airplane, loved it!), scotch glasses, DSLR camera, and other things I can't think of now.

  • Last year I made dh a box filled with plans for twelve dates. I planned an outing and meal for each and the name of a sitter who would watch dd that night. I assigned a month to each, and printed off menus and information for each date. Some dates I prepaid for (concert tix) others I just said "this month we'll be eating a picnic here and seeing a romantic movie".
He loved it and while in the long run it was expensive, we were able to space it out over the year.

So funny thing. I immediately though you meant a handjob when you said an old fashioned. South Park has an episode about them and DH always jokes about wanting an old fashioned. He's not a drinker. Plus it would be totally not out of his way of thinking to ask for a handjob for Christmas.
Ha! I am so glad I'm not the only one that that is immediately what popped into my mind.

  • Our Christmas gift to each other is a cottage at the beach in July. We are going for a week and deposit is due Jan 1. Normally we can swing a vacation and Christmas but this year we are going low key to have funds for baby. Our two year old will get the same Christmas as usual though - we just won't go all out for each other. We usually do too much anyhow honestly.
  • Check out Popular Science magazine latest issue (with "100" written large on front cover) and older issues for gadgets. They always have rare and innovative ideas for gifts, and they range from $10 (US) to thousands. I'm thinking specifically of one I just saw: Google Cardboard $25 - sounds silly, but looks like a virtual reality headset that interfaces with apps in your phone to create an experience. At that price, it's worth the novelty. Also check out MoMA online store (Museum of Modern Art) for another good range of gift ideas.
