Preeclampsia diagnosis

34 weeks.. Was out there.. Doing my thing.. Chugging along working my 2 jobs.. Normal prenatal visit.. BAM.. 2+ protein in urine.. BP 150s.. Life stops.. Been in hospital for 2 nights

I am stable.. Doing well, but still a lot of protein.. Baby looks great.. Got steroids to speed up her development.. Prob will go home today on bed rest with lots of outpatient appts.. Any signs I am getting worse means time to deliver.

I don't have any medical questions..
I am getting great care and let's face it.. Preeclampsia isn't 100% well understood by medical professionals anyways. However I am told that this is relatively common in FTMs and am surprised I haven't seen more posts about it. Just wondering if anyone is going through something similar and wants to chat.

Re: Preeclampsia diagnosis

  • Nothing similar but sending you thoughts and prayers.

  • I'm a FTM so no experience of my own, lots of secondhand experience in my family though. Fx for you, hope they can keep LO cooking as long as possible! Keep us posted.
  • FTM here as well. No preeclampsia yet, but i was diagnosed with hypertension a few months ago and have been having trace amounts of protein for probably the last month. I'm scheduled to be induced at 38 weeks (Nov. 18) due to that and some other health issues. It's a little scary but I know my doctor is doing what's best for baby. Hopefully your LO will be able to cook a while longer for you!
  • Thinking of you. Hope things remain stable.

  • Its good that they diagnosed you. It is really dangerous if not monitored. Basically the only way to get better is to give birth. I'm fine but one of my sisters had it and a coworker had it but she didn't know and almost died in labor. My sister went on to have a few more kids but the coworker is afraid to.

Good luck and call your DR. if anything feels off ever.
  • No experience here, but just wanted to chime in with good thoughts and vibes for you and your LO. Hope the baby can cook as long as possible safely!

  • No experience with this, but I'm very happy that it was quickly diagnosed and it sounds like you're getting the best possible care given what's known about this. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers that your LO keeps cooking and you remain healthy.

  • I'm really sorry to hear about your diagnosis.  I don't have any experience with pre-e specifically, but I was on bedrest with DS due to HBP.  It sucked, but luckily I was able to get to 39 weeks before they induced me.  I'm nervous about getting it again this time, but so far, so good.

@misskilljoy and other PPs have brought up some really good points about pre-e.  It's just so weird since no one seems to understand exactly why it happens and there's really no way to prevent it or treat it (other than delivery). But its great that your doctors are monitoring you and it sounds like you are in good hands.  T&P's baby cooks longer and you both remain healthy!

  • Thinking of you and your LO. I have PIH but no protein in urine or any other pre-e symptoms. I am being seen weekly, and every appointment is worse than the last bc my BP keeps climbing. I hope you are able to keep your LO cooking as long as possible!!!

  • My BP was low during 1st and 2nd tri (usually 100/60) but is much higher now (120 +/-5 / 80 +/-5).   My doctor is not concerned but it freaks me out a little.  I have a BP meter at home so I check myself daily to ease my mind.

Hope your BP is better and LO gets to cook a little longer! Sending T & P your way.

  • I have a mild case of preeclampsia :/
My blood pressure goes up and down and hasn't been too high by normal standards (133/88 was my highest). But my normal range is 105/60. The diastolic number is what's worrisome. I've done two 24 hour urine catches, the first showing a lot of protein and the second just under the preeclampsia line. And I have migraine like headaches constantly and spotty vision that comes and goes. My doctor has told me to rest as much as possible and I go in twice a week for monitoring. We've done weekly growth scans and just keep checking on everything.

It is frustrating that they can't explain why or how this happens! I'm sorry for all of you also dealing with it :(
  • I am considered borderline right now and they are monitoring me really closely to be certain. I can relate to being suddenly whisked off to L&D and being forced to go through that endless wait. I'm sorry about your diagnosis. I know it is crazy frustrating but they know how to take care of yo and your LO. Thoughts and prayers that your LO stays in there as long as possible and you stay healthy!

  • I was told if hypertension runs in your family, then you are at increased risk. My mom has hypertension but I have low blood pressure. My normal is 90/50 and now it's increased to 110/70 (36w reading), dr said there's nothing to worry about even though it's an increase. Of course, because of my mom, I am watching it closely! Just ensure you relax and stay on bed rest. I'm on maternity leave right now, and was dying at work, but now that I'm home, I find myself wanting to do so much more than I ever did at work lol. So I understand if you can't sit still.

  • I had preE with #1. I went in the the 28 week appt ( was like 27w5D), I can't remember what the protein was, but my BP was very high and I was told I could call a family member or the ambulance, but either way, I needed to go to the hospital and not be surprised if my baby was born later int eh day. He was born the next day. I barely got my 2nd shot of steroids. My placenta was having some issues too.

Anyway, that was 7 years ago and my son was born 1lb 13oz. He is currently angry with me for telling him to put on his coat if he wants to go outside. :-) Oh, and clearly I had more children. lol No issues with PreE with them. I did continue to spill protein for a bit though (into the next pregnancy).

I am glad it was caught though and they are able to put you on bed rest and keep baby baking. :-)
