Help name Kira's brother

Hi All!
I have so much respect for the opinions of the baby name gurus on this board, I have been lurking here since I was pregnant with my daughter in 2010 and am eager for any and all advice. My daughter is Kira (wanted the traditional irish spelling of Ciara but knew that would get butchered in the US). We would like an Irish name for our son, due in January, but it's a not a necessity. MN is family name and will not change regardless of FN. Last name is two syllables and ends in "son." My husband and I have loved the name Seamus for years but are apprehensive to use it since we worry about everyone messing up the spelling and pronunciation (plus I heard on here years about someone only hearing "Shame-Us" when they read Seamus and that spoiled it a bit for me). Our other favorite name is my current top pick- Rowan, which now worries me slightly as it's becoming more popular for girls (name berry rated it the #1 unisex name of 2013, ugh!) and because our last name also ends with an N.
We try to stay away from super popular or trendy names…other names we like, although not nearly as much as Rowan and Seamus:
Caleb
Wyatt
Max
Brendan
Cullan
Leo
Benjamin (too popular for my personal liking but a great name)
Open to any other suggestions and thoughts on any or all of the above, particular our top runners. Thank you in advance!

Re: Help name Kira's brother

  • I love Seamus!! I think people would pronounce it incorrectly but would easily remember once corrected. I also adore Rowan! Both in my head Rowan is rhymey with your LN.

I also love Leo on your list and like Brendan, Benjamin, and Max. Wyatt and Caleb are okay but feel too popular to me. Cullen is NMS.

  • I say stick with Seamus! It is a great name. The spelling will throw some folks, but not everyone (people are mostly familiar with Sean, which sort of sets a precedent) and folks will remember it once corrected.
