April 2014 Moms

Solids

So we are doing a combination of BLW and purees.  It depends on our schedules on the amount of time we have to sit with her etc.  IF you are feeding purees, how much do you feed at one time? And how many times per day?  DH will feed her a whole 4.5 oz jar of Beechnut naturals in one sitting, because he says she will eat all of it.  I usually only give her half a jar, mixed with some oatmeal.

Web search left my head spinning.  TIA!

Re: Solids

  • The more food we feed DD, the less she sleeps. We do a full bottle first and an hour later offer purée. She will eat anywhere from 1/4 - 1/2 a beech nut jar or two cubes from an ice cube tray (about 2T). I had to force the milk issue with my mom and MIL, but I'm happy I did after figuring out that was messing with her sleep.

  • Good to know.  I haven't noticed it messing with her sleep yet.  Last night she had 1/2 a jar of puree and went down at 745p (time change has her messed up), but she slept until 230am, woke up for a bottle, and went back to sleep.  She was sleeping straight through the night before we moved her from the rock n play to her crib, no crying for bottles/waking up.  This was before solids were started though.
  • Are you offering breastmilk or formula first?

  • We do a half jar of purées (2oz) 3x per day. Doesn't matter if we do it first or second chase will always finish his bottle. Depending on timing I will give him something while we are eating like a piece of apple, bell pepper, banana, avocado, etc. but that's not daily. I'm only home for dinner and I really don't want my MIL giving him any solids besides purées because I don't trust her.
  • We do a mix of blw and purees, he nurses first and about 30-45 minutes later he eats while I eat my breakfast. Morning is usually yogurt with a fruit purée and Apple slices, lunch is some type of finger food and then dinner is whatever we are eating. Everything is time depending and chanes frequently. I haven't noticed a change in sleep.
  • We do cereals, purees and some BLW.

Breakfast is about 1tbsp of cereal (oatmeal or barley with bm) and then some fruit...a piece of apple or banana to play with. Some days she eats all of it, others none.
Lunch is 1tbsp of a vegetable puree and dinner is 1-2tbsp of cereal and then fruit. I always breastfeed 45 minutes-1hour before meals. I have not yet introduced meats and I have not noticed any change in her sleep.
  • We are doing a mix, too. I am making most of their food and I don't exactly measure - just a few cubes each if it's frozen or half a bowl full if I'm pouring applesauce, for example. I feed until it's gone or they lose interest and do solids usually 2x per day (bottles 5x). When we are away from home the jars are easier and right now my twins are splitting a 4.5 oz jar in addition to their bottles if we are out during mealtime.

  • Exactly what @LalaMama81‌ said. For the first year, breastmilk or formula is their main source of nutrition and food is supposed to complement the milk, but not replace it. It's all practice for later.
It's more important for your baby to have the milk and then anything above and after that is gravy.
  • DS is BF gets purees 2x/day plus a snack on weekdays, weekends he gets purees and whatever we're eating.

For purees, he gets 3oz at lunch and 2-3oz at dinner. Snacks are 5 or so puffs or some cubed cheese. He's been eating purees since 4.5 months and still nurses constantly along with taking the same amount of BM at daycare.

  • She eats her bottles on her normal scheduke, and then we add breakfast an hour or so later, about half a jar of food, with a bit of oatmeal, and then maybe some banana or avacado. Same with dinner. DH will let her eat more because "she wants to"...she's only 6.5 months and he's wrapped around her little finger!
