Infertility

Need Help Info

I just got word from my OB/gyn that my AMH level is .1. They told me to not change any meds and referred me to a fertility specialist. I am 42 (43 in Jan) and just got married. I am worried about this process, as they are already talking in-vitro, which I am not sure I have the emotional ability to go through that. Having just got married, we certainly don't have the money. I guess my question is how others have dealt with this. I am reading articles that a VIT D difficiency can cause low numbers, which I have. I'm just now able to talk about it without crying. Any advise?

Re: Need Help Info

  • Congrats on your recent marriage!
    I too have low AMH (.48) and low vitamin d (22). I am 32.
I think it really depends on your doctor on which route you will go. My dr was willing to move forward with iui first. I responded ok to the meds but then moved on to ivf due to other issues.
I was very scared/anxious/nervous transferring from my gyn to my RE but he did a very good job of calming me down and explaining exactly what was going on.
Best of luck! The ladies on this board are a wealth of knowledge :)

  • Hi there! I'm sorry you find yourself here :( I'm glad that you're being referred to an RE straight away. It's true that Vit D deficiency can cause AMH levels to be artificially low, but it won't usually go up by much with supplementation. Unfortunately, I would agree with your doctor that IVF is probably your best bet. Yes, you *could* spend a few months on other treatments (also expensive), but in the end, your best chances for success would be with IVF. There are programs and studies available at different clinics to help with costs, you might be able to have some things charged to your insurance (even if they only cover things like ultrasounds and bloodwork, it helps!) and if you're like most of us, you can always take out a loan. Yes, it's alot of money, but I would regret *not* doing it, more than I would regret spending the money, you know? Pretty much all the women on this board are going through IVF (either currently, are between cycles, or are waiting to cycle) so there is a ton of advice and information here! Mostly, take care of yourself, and know that you're not alone :)

  • I would agree with the above poster about IVF being your best bet.  I just found out my amh is .24 in August which was a total shock to us.  I was really upset for a while...terrified of the money and how we had escalated to that point...but we are making it work.  Yes it is a TON of money but it's worth it to us to try for a biological child.  We did do one IUI (also expensive) and I seemed to respond great to clomid but we still got a bfn which further convinced me that we needed to do IVF.
