I have been dealing with it. Drink LOTS of water, and eat fiber type cereal (raisin bran, wheaties...), dried prunes (you can eat like 5 a day). Oh and prune juice helps as well (not the best tasting, but hey it does the trick!) Hope this helps!
If it is already bad, the diet stuff won't do much. Try miralax or milk of magnesia (Phillips).
A stool softener (Colace) helps to prevent constipation too.
This is the list of OK things from my OB: Mine has gotten bad enough to go to the Milk of Magnesia (a gentle laxative) but if you do the stuff in the top part of the list before you are too backed up - those are more gentle ways to stay regular.
Senekot s. It's safe to take while pregnant and it works great. I've always had issues with constipation even when not pregnant and it's what my drs recommended and the only thing that works for me.
@df159166, a great natural remedy that worked for me is lemon water. Yesterday I drank a cup of hot water with lemon wedges first thing in the am, then waited 20 mins and drank tepid lemon water, about 24oz and yes it made me pee but I finally passed that brick. I repeated the hot & tepid water after supper and today, for the first time since becoming pg, I feel like my stools have returned to normal. I'm sure drinking all that water helped too. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking otc meds, every doctor had their own list of what they prefer. For example, my ob doesn't like milk of mag or senna because they are stimulating and can cause cramping.
My Dr recommended magnesium citrate which is pretty similar to milk of magnesium. I have a major problem even while not pregnant and that does the trick. It's not an enjoyable process, or rather it was not for me. But, after the relief is worth it. Diet, water, colace, and miralax do nothing for you when you are so backed up. Atleast not for me. And a cup of coffee first thing before eating breakfast sometimes does the trick too. Good luck:)
